Obituary of John A. Hoyt

JULY, 20 1982 - MAY 20, 2023

John Aaron Hoyt , 40, of Duxbury, MA passed away unexpectedly on May, 20th 2023 in Boston, MA surrounded by family.

John was born in Des Moines, Iowa to Jennifer and John Charles Hoyt on July 20th, 1982. 

He grew up in Carlisle, IA and moved to Creston, IA in 1991. While at Creston High School he was active in football, baseball and golf. He was a member of the Future Farmer’s of America and National Honor Society. He attended The University of Iowa and graduated in 2006 with his Bachelor’s in Science. 

In 2006, he was accepted to Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.  He graduated from PCOM with a Masters in Science and began his career in the orthopedic medical device industry. While in Philadelphia, he made many lasting friendships and it was there where he met his wife, Lindsay, while she was attending graduate school.

John began working for Smith and Nephew in 2009. While there, he was recognized with the Zenith award and Representative of the year in 2012, and honored as Management Key contributor in 2015. He was Regional Director at Trice medical from 2016-2019 and recognized as Regional Sales Director of the year in 2017. In 2019, he began working for Innova Surgical group as the Director of Sales-New England. Through his leadership, emphasis on service, clinical knowledge, and expertise in market development, he and his team significantly impacted the business.  

Throughout his career, John had the unique ability to cultivate strong relationships with others in the industry in such a way that he was viewed as an innovator in the field, a mentor among his peers and a trusted friend to all who knew him. 

John spent his life truly living. He was an avid fisherman, master crafter, outdoors man and most recently earned his Captain’s fishing license. He spent his summers fishing before dawn, captaining the ship for family adventures, enjoying fires at the beach and barbecuing with friends.  To enjoy the New England winters, he taught himself and subsequently all three of his girls to ski.  When he wasn’t on a boat or on the slopes, John might have been off hunting ducks, in his basement building fishing rods, cheering on his beloved Iowa Hawkeyes, doing hours of endless yard work or enjoying a local IPA with a friend. 

John touched everyone he met with his kind, friendly, and generous spirit. He was the friend you didn’t know you needed in your life until you met him. He was affectionately known as “neighbor John,” always willing to help with any task, big or small. He was an amazing colleague and friend. He was passionate, selfless, and always asking how he can help. Most importantly, he was a devoted husband, son, brother and father. The true joys of his life were his daughters, Olivia and Lila. He taught them to be brave and try new things as often as they could. He taught them to find the fun in life and how to make the best s’mores. He was larger than life. He was the best daddy and will be greatly missed.  

John is survived by his wife, Lindsay, their two daughters, Olivia and Lila; his parents Jennifer and Chuck Hoyt of Creston, IA; brother Ryan Hoyt and his wife, Jennifer; nephew, Cameron Hoyt and niece, Kendall Hoyt of Diagonal, IA; Sister-in-law, Brooke Ponder and her husband, Jeffrey; nephews, Miles and Owen Ponder of San Diego; and father-in-law David Teittinen of Plymouth, MA

Friends are invited to remember John’s life with visiting hours at the Shepherd Funeral Home, 216 Main Street, Kingston, MA on May 30th from 4-7 PM.  There will be a service at Pilgrim Church of Duxbury at 404 Washington Street at 11am on Wednesday, May 31st. It will be followed by a Celebration of Life at 12pm at Island Creek Oyster Farm, Duxbury, MA. A private burial will be held. 

A memorial service will be held in Creston, IA at a later date.
