“He was the friend you didn’t know you needed in your life until you met him.”
This line from the obituary really hit home. I met Aaron our junior year of college at Iowa. Both of us certainly have friends that we have known longer, or spent more time with, but he had an uncanny way of making an outsized impact on the people he met. His truly genuine nature, and zest for life were infectious, and a positive impact on everyone he met.
Aaron always seemed to somehow fit 36 hours into every day. Balancing work, hobbies, friends, and family. As most everyone moved to various places after college, it was easy for people to drift apart, but always made every effort to keep in touch. The few times I would be out on the east coast, he would always find a way to meet up, and every time he was back near Iowa City, he would reach out. Many years, especially since COVID, it was just a few random text messages, but it remained evident how much he cared about the people around him. As we gain more perspective throughout life, the small things become the big things.
My deepest condolences to Lindsay and the entire Hoyt family. As a father of two girls of similar age, my heart breaks for Olivia and Lila. You all deserved more time with such an incredible person. I hope, someday, the girls can look back with pride knowing that there was some guy in Iowa that they barely met, and will never remember, who had a better life because he was lucky enough to meet their dad. I know my experience was common to anyone who knew him. Good people have that type of impact, and he was one of the greatest.

I feel profoundly fortunate that I got to know Aaron and will always cherish the memories of life at 702 Iowa. These are some photos I found of us hanging out late (as we did) from January 2005. I remember the joy captured in these photos as being his normal state and he tended to bring that out in others with ease. My sincere condolences to the entire Hoyt family.

Q: What will you never forget about John A.?
A: John and I were on a work sales call that turned out to be difficult. As we were leaving we saw a Jeep dealership, he said “turn in here” and he proceeded to tell me everything he was going to do to modify his Jeep. We totally forgot about the call we were just on.
Classic John! Will miss that dude.
Sincerely. Tom Kovacs

Jim and I offer our deepest condolences and send prayers for strength and comfort to all of Aaron’s family. Having only the chance to briefly visit with him it was clear he was a young man who approached his life with an effervescence, a determination, and a deep love for his family and friends. Holding space in our hearts for you all.

Heartbreaking news. Sincerest condolences to Lindsay, Olivia & Lila, Ryan, Chuck and Jennifer, and everyone lucky enough to have known Aaron. We were all so lucky to have had him in our lives.
Two memories that’ll forever capture Aaron for me were from the first day I met him and my only trip to Creston—the first (likely last) time I went turkey hunting.
I met Aaron at a Philadelphia “neighborhood cleanup” alongside Mifflin School, just a block down the street from where we both lived on Midvale Avenue. A neighbor told me about it that morning and I decided to lend a hand for a few hours. While most neighborhood residents were otherwise occupied, those who participated mostly picked up trash or maybe did some basic trimming along the street, walkways and easily accessible areas. Given the few handy, outdoorsy worker-bees who’d ventured to climb over a stone wall and upon a steep slope to clear the area of dead trees, logs, etc., it seemed interesting and challenging. So after the obvious “clean up” tasks, Aaron and I moved on to liberating the trees, bushes and what we later realized were loads of beautiful natural boulders from the vines covering and oppressing them. Except for the trash, the area didn’t really look too bad before, just like unkept city greenspace. But by the end of the day, it became a noteworthy neighborhood landscape feature. [Which final product I got to see after an ER stitched the deep gash on my “upper leg” (lower right butt cheek) from slipping and sliding down part of that rocky slope.]
We hit it off right away, had tons of fun working and contributing to neighborhood enhancement together, talking sports and interests and carrying on like old friends and kindred spirits. What a great first impression of Aaron and foreshadow of the next-door neighborly friendship to follow. Since I left first, I don’t know when he finished. But I don’t doubt he was among the last to leave. Thing is, my Aaron intro story wasn’t so memorable for how hard-working and capable he was (they guy wasn’t easy to keep up with), or his interests and perspectives, or even that mid-western charm. I mean, sure, all those things are so Aaron, but those are part of most every Aaron Hoyt story. The kicker from that story was in all that it turned out that Aaron, the guy who probably contributed the most of any neighbor to make the area better for everybody, wasn’t even a neighbor yet! He hadn’t even closed on the house yet, more less moved in. Remains a mystery how he even knew to show up.
Then there’s the turkey-hunting story: My first time holding a loaded shotgun. On a hunt. For wild turkeys. In Iowa… He seemed to like it. So sure. Why not give it a try? So there I was, waking up at 2 or 3 or whatever far-too-early time of the morning, bundling up, trudging in a new pair of rugged, waterproof work boots into a dark, cold, swampy field, then into a dark, cold, swampy patch of woods, to a stream, where I sat on the ground with my back against a tree, holding shotgun while listening to turkeys mock our efforts while remaining safely and completely out of sight. The sun came up. We moved. Hours passed. Nothing. Didn’t pull the trigger a once. Aaron seemed perfectly happy and in his element with that big smile and spring in his step.
Despite Aaron’s efforts and apparent competence in the activity, that excursion was the only time he’d returned home without a turkey, at least to that point in his life. What an unequivocally miserable experience—but just the turkey part. The flights and weekend hanging out with Aaron, meeting Ryan at the airport, spending time with Ryan and Jennifer and Chuck and Aaron’s friends from home, enjoying their family’s hospitality, being introduced to Iowa and what remains the best Kansas City BBQ I’ve every had… Was an adventure (and story) I’ll cherish forever. I went turkey hunting with Aaron in Iowa and I hated it—but just the turkey part! And I’d re-live it all over again if I could.
The guy was so full of life. To Chuck and Jennifer and Ryan, thank you so much again for your parts in that weekend. To Lindsay and Olivia and Lita, I wish you’d have had more time and adventures with him, a guy who regrettably I’d missed in my daily life for too long and wish I’d have called more recently. We’ve all lost such a unique and special person. I hope you find peace in your memories of him and knowing just what a full life he’d lived, even though his time was too short. We were lucky to have had Aaron in our lives. You’ll never be alone in missing him.

Growing up in Creston and going through high school a year ahead, I always remember Aaron smiling and happy. When we were both in college at Iowa, same thing. Every time our paths crossed, he always took the time to give a big hug, a smile, and truly showed interest and concern for those around him. His laugh was contagious! It was such a great time in life as we all set out to do our own things, meet new people and grow, but could always count on the welcoming smile and support of a friend from home. Many memories at tailgates, Iowa Football games and our years in Iowa City are among my favorites and I hold onto those memories a little tighter.
Genuine, sincere, and happy... We were the lucky ones to have known you.
To Lindsay, Olivia & Lila, Ryan, Chuck & Jennifer- I'm so very sorry for your loss and know that words are nowhere near enough. Thank you for sharing him with us.

I had the pleasure of working alongside John at Smith Nephew & Trice Medical. We shared the same passions: family, fishing, hunting & a good oyster. John never stopped learning, he was relentless and disciplined. John’s attitude and zest for life was contagious. I’m going to miss him, a lot.
