Q: How did you meet Charles "Chip"?
A: Chip was my graduate school advisor at Harvard, from 1981 to 1990. He believed in me and mentored me (in between trips to Thailand). He was in Thailand while I was writing my thesis, so I would send him letters through his office at the Harvard Institute for International Development to go into the weekly diplomatic pouch. I just found a couple of letters I received from him around 1988, in which he thoughtfully commented on the analytic issues I was wrestling with. He had a profound influence on my interests and career development, and I'll never forget him or cease to be thankful he was my advisor. After I graduated, I moved to Washington, where I worked, met my husband, and raised a family. I'm only sorry that I have not spoken to him in many years.
