Dear Collins Family,
I just learned of the passing of David. How unfortunate that our paths never crossed again. I met him over the Edgartown Regatta Week the summer of 1997 when I had the privilege of being a crewmate on X-Dimension supporting the Foredeck. I was so thrilled to be able to stay on this boat for the week, share time with this very generous and kind family and was even more delighted when Dave and Joan generously allowed me the opportunity to take the platter home from our Second Place Finish of the Cruising Canvas Class on that Thursday. I proudly display this with photos in my home still today.
Time does not pass long without my thoughts of this time together, our racing in the Duxbury waters and the lessons I learned from the helm of Skipper Dave and his navigator, Jim Soque. What a wonderful person; willing to teach and direct in a way that gave me confidence in the craft of sail racing.
Fair winds, skipper. You will be missed. Until we meet again on God's vast oceans in heaven,
E. Lucia (Malinowski) (Pirone) Wright - aka Cia

I had the pleasure of meeting David after my mother passed away on March 12, 2020. Jarrett, as she referred to him, was her high school and college boyfriend in Philadelphia. During COVID, my husband and I joined David and his wife on their deck looking over the marsh of Duxbury on a beautiful spring day. He shared stories of my mom I loved hearing. We talked of sailing and raising kids. We talked of the small world that for 40 years he sailed round the island at the Edgartown Yacht Club and not once bumped into my mom. How two Philadelphia kids spent their adult lives living 15 miles a party in Massachusetts and never reconnected. My husband and I left the house that afternoon well entertained. We had the good fortune of spending a beautiful day with such an interesting couple. I knew my mother’s first love would be special and he was just that. Sending you all love and light.

We have lost a giant of a man. His legacy: David Collins literally changed how the world gets things done! He was a man of many gifts: A visionary with a brilliant mind, endearing personality, Irish wit, enormous “people” skills, and enduring loyalty to friends. His had a vision of what could be, a vision now manifested in bar codes in every corner of the globe. I—and all my colleagues at Computer Identics (CI)—are among the lucky ones invited along that incredible journey.
Mine began in 1970 and continued for 14 great years. During those years, David was not only my CEO, he was my mentor, occasional confidant and, most important, my friend. (He also taught me to sail!) The antithesis of a dreaded micro-manager, David gave us all the freedom and latitude to do our jobs, all within his professional ethos of “work hard, play hard”. He made it a point to recognize and celebrate the victories and accomplishments of all his personnel, and collectively, we had more than our fair share.
Visions are nothing without resolve. David had that in spades. Even his sailboat back then, a C&C 35, carried the name RESOLUTE. He once told me his goal was to build the best 40-person company in the world. Some years later, after we had successfully gone public and numbered 240 people, David quipped, “Ed, I think things got out-of-hand!”
Angie and I extend our deepest, most heart-felt sympathies to the entire Collins Family. We all share your loss. But every time we see a barcode, we remember and celebrate the man who made it all possible, David Jarrett Collins. Thank you, sir! Well done!
