When I think about my dad, I think about how he was larger than life. Wherever he was, his presence was so captivating no matter what he was doing. He could be silent, but you could feel his love and personality coming through. He was the best father, husband, son, brother and friend anyone could have asked for. Always willing to help, yet never asking for anything in return.
My dad, along with my mom, taught me many things. One being unconditional love. You could take one look at my parents and know how much they loved each other. Married for 37 years… many did not think they would make it because they were young when they got married (19 and 23). And only 5 short months later I arrived. My parents and I grew up together and we created a bond like no other. Up until Jay came along, it was the 3 of us against the world.
Dad got injured when he was 37 and was unable to work. Most people in his position would have probably given up, but not my dad. Along with being the best stay at home dad and husband, he became the most amazing caregiver. My Papa would always say to my Nana that my mom could not do any better, and he was absolutely right.
My dad was one of the strongest people I knew. Going into his emergency back surgery, he was told he would most likely not walk again. Well he showed everyone, he woke up and moved his feet immediately. He was determined to walk again, and he did. His injury was a blessing and a curse. A blessing because if he was working, he would have missed a lot of games, cheerleading competitions and other important events in my life that I was happy he was a part of.
My dad loved watching me cheer… My parents never missed a game. Even when I was in college, we would travel all over New England. One of my favorite memories is when we would do a cheer to my dad in the stands and he would cheer back to us, sometimes even louder and with more enthusiasm than the entire squad.
My dad taught me everything has its place. It drives Jay crazy, but when he needs something, I always know exactly where it is.
Dad, I love you and miss you more than words can ever express.
If I could get another chance, another walk, another dance with you. I’d play a song that would never, ever end. How I’d love, love, love to dance with you again.
