Obituary of Franklin K. Hoyt

Franklin Knibloe Hoyt, of Duxbury, a former Vice President of Houghton Mifflin Co, Boston, died on January 6, 2010, at the age of 102. He joined Houghton Mifflin in 1930 and became Vice President of Finance and Administration and Director until his retirement in 1972. He was a member of the American Bar Association. He was born in Indianapolis in 1907. His family moved two years later to Newton, MA. He was a graduate of Newton High School, Phillips Academy Andover, and the Williams College, where he played on the varsity baseball team, was captain of the hockey team, was a member if Sigma Phi Society, President of the Student Council, the honor society, and of his class of 1930. His former positions included Chairman of the Corporation of Simmons College, where he was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, Trustee of the American College of Greece in Athens, President of the Stone Institute and Newton Home for the Aged, Chairman of the Newton Cooperative bank and Director of American Mutual Insurance Co., Arkwright Insurance Co, Ballantine Books, and Keystone International Fund. He was formerly Commodore of the Duxbury Yacht Club, V.P. of Brae Burn Country Club and Clerk and Deacon of the Second Church in Newton. He was an initial Founder and important supporter of the Duxbury Bay Maritime School and its founding in 1997 and supporter of the Duxbury Rural and Historical Society. In 1931 he married Alice Potter of Newton, who died in 2006. They moved from Newton to Duxbury in 1980. He is survived by a son F. Sherman Hoyt of Duxbury, and two daughters, Mrs. Alice H. Hall of Duxbury, and Mrs. Marian H. Corbett of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, ten grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. Internment will be at the Mayflower cemetery, Duxbury, in a private service. A memorial service and reception will be held on June 13th at 3:00 at 51 Abrams Hill, Duxbury. In lieu of flowers donations are suggested to the Duxbury Bay Maritime School, Duxbury Rural and Historical Society, the Wildlands Trust, or Simmons College.
