Walter R. Flanagan of Duxbury passed away, Dec. 11, 2008 at the age of 88. Born in 1919 in Brooklyn, NY, the 2nd youngest of 6 children born to Walter Aloysius Flanagan and Mary (Smith) Flanagan. He is a Veteran of World War II. Walter was a member of the 29th Division and was stationed in Europe, near the end of the war he met and married Marguerite Frances Rochon. For more that 30 years he worked for Sperry Gyroscope Co. a defense plant on Long Island. A feature that marked his entire adult life was his giving generously of his time to individuals and institutions: he led support groups for the Richmond Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Assoc., was an AARP tax preparation volunteer, a Literacy volunteer, a Little League manager, and a hockey coach. He is a past President of the Parent’s Assoc. of Hobart and William Smith Colleges. He served for many years as the correspondent for the WWII veterans of the 29th Division. He volunteered in several capacities at the Senior Citizens Center in Duxbury and also volunteered at the Duxbury Thrift Shop. His wife Marguerite passed away in 1996. He is survived by 2 sons; Christopher M. Flanagan of Duxbury and Kevin T. Flanagan of Seattle WA. Also, his grandchildren Courtney Brooke Elio and Dalton C. Flanagan both of AZ and 3 Great grandchildren; Max Elio, Theo Elio and Luca Elio, and many loving nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his brother, Edmund Flanagan and his sisters; Frances, Grace, Mildred and Irene. A Memorial Service will be held Jan. 24, 2009 at 11am at the First Parish Church Tremont St. in Duxbury.
