Memories of a Life
In Loving Remembrance of Robert A. Cline
His smile instantly put you at ease and made you feel welcome. He said, “Hi I’m Bob, sometimes spelled with 2 O’s”. The gentle banter and teasing were tell-tale signs that you were ok in his book.
Sitting at his kitchen table and listening to stories when work was harder but life was simpler, values were rich and having a good time was on the cheap, and most importantly, family and your word were everything.
That infamous unsettled tab was always mentioned when you stayed for dinner or stopped by unexpectedly. Though his prices were reasonable it was always fun to argue and barter about what you contributed to the dinner and what should be added as a credit. He never did produce a bill and one thing was certain, the food and the company were never a disappointment.
The love in his eyes was clear as he introduced his wife of 50 plus years to the doctor who had just entered the room as his “Child Bride”. The “Bride” shared a quiet laugh and a smirk but the romance of his statement was undeniable.
The luxury convertible approached. There he was with so many other patriots who served there country bravely. He waved to the crowd as we cheered, “Papa Bob! Over here Papa Bob! Dad! Over here!” He saw us and his smile widened.
Making apple pies with the grandchildren and anticipating his reaction which was never disappointing. Always a smile with a comment that included something like, “Good! Good! Tastes like more!”
Answering the phone and hearing, “Hi Hon, What’s new? Have you seen that bewildering son of mine?”
Seeing the man become a young boy before our eyes as he demonstrated for his grandsons how to use a steam engine just like the one he had as a child. Watching the pride and joy he had in that moment of sharing something he loved from the past with those he loved in the present.
“I see you put the stem on the apple this time.” He said after holding his grandson in the NICU. His amazement and pride in his grandchildren never seemed to fade.
A man who made an impact on many in his lifetime. A man who will be missed by many in their lifetime.
