Shirley Irene Gunhild Hanson Carter died September 25 at her home in The Village at Duxbury. She was born in Minneapolis, MN, in 1919 to Carl and Irene Hanson and spent her early years in many cities as her father moved with Western Electric. She graduated from Lasell Junior College and Pembroke College cum laude. When she was 64 she received her doctorate in education from Boston University. While working for Evelyn Wood Reading Dynamics, she taught an 8 week speed reading course at the White House to President Nixon’s staff. She also taught reading and study skills at Milton Academy, Simmons, Emmanuel and Bridgewater Colleges, and the Learning Network, where she received a distinguished service award. In later years she taught privately. As a resident of Duxbury for 53 years, she attended St. John’s Episcopal Church, was a member of the Duxbury School Committee and Snug Harbor Investment Partnership, and active in the two Duxbury garden clubs. She and her husband of 68 years, Sherb, were members of the Duxbury Yacht Club and spent many happy times sailing. She is survived by her daughter Carol Shilepsky, son Lyon Carter II, son-in-law Sandy Shilepsky, daughters-in-law Cynthia, and Paige Carter; grandchildren Lisa Van Raalte, Beth Price, Lyon Carter III, Alexandra Carter, Christian Carter, Max Carter, and; and 5 great grandchildren She was predeceased by her husband F. Sherburne Carter Sr. and son F. Sherburne Carter Jr. A service will be held at 3 o’clock on Sunday, October 6 in St. John’s Episcopal Church, Duxbury MA. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that contributions be sent to Jordan Hospital in Plymouth MA.
