Obituary of Marjorie Shreeve Winslow

Please share a memory of Marjorie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Marjorie Shreeve Winslow, 89, of Duxbury, Massachusetts and Mesa, Arizona died at her Duxbury home on November 30th. She was born in Muncie, Indiana but her family moved west, to Phoenix, when she was 3 years old and she was raised there. She attended DePauw University in Indiana, graduating in 1945. While a senior, she entered Vogue Magazine’s prestigious Prix de Paris competition and was among the winners, receiving a job as a copywriter. She became a fashion editor, working in that capacity for both Vogue and Mademoiselle, in both Los Angeles and New York, for several years. Married in New York in 1950 to Richard K. Winslow, a newspaperman, the couple raised their three children in Riverdale, New York. Marjorie’s accomplishments were many and varied. She wrote and published a children’s book, MUD PIES & OTHER RECIPES, in 1959, which has been in print almost continuously ever since: the New York Review of Books Classics issued a new edition in October, 2010. Often ahead of her time, she started a Mexican food business in New York in the 1960s. She was also a carpenter, upholsterer, clothing designer, excellent cook and was known by friends and family for her dry wit. A devoted wife and mother, she was predeceased by her husband in 2010 but leaves a brother, Walton Shreeve, of Greenport, NY; daughters Susan, of Rapidan, VA, and Kate, of Washington, Vermont, and son, Henry, of Kingston, MA. She is also survived by four grandsons, Nick Sherman, of Huntington, VT; Sam Sherman, of Brooklyn, NY; Zach Sherman, of Providence, RI; Eli Sherman, of Waltham, MA and one great-grandson, Jacob Sherman. A memorial celebration of her long and happy life will be held in the spring.
