Obituary of James A. Collins
James Anthony Collins from Carver, MA, passed away on November 13, 2024. He was born in Boston on February 7th, 1935, to Anna and James L. Collins.
Jim’s Father took him to a movie when he was very young, where he saw Gene Kelly dance. His Dad asked how he liked the movie. He said he liked Gene Kelly’s twirls, high jumps and very high kicks. “I would love to do all that stuff.” Shortly after that, his Father enrolled him the Lyons School of Dance. That was the start of his wonderful career.
In the early years, he worked at Blinstrubs, several Dinner Theaters and Summer Stock. Among other achievements he was chosen for a special performance of Brigadoon for President Elect, John F Kennedy at The Boston Garden.
His work resulted in his connection with many famous celebrities. He is most well-known for his role as “Mother Ginger” in the Nutcracker, in the Boston Ballet. He played that role for 36 years! He played this part in all 51 shows and NEVER missed a performance! The act demanded his fanciest footwork as he maneuvered his 125-pound costume and moved around the stage in stilts!
Jim was an extremely talented dancer, teacher, choreographer and costume designer. He had so many talents and loved them all! He was kind and always willing to share his knowledge and expertise. His favorite talent was dancing!
From his tap dancing lessons at the Lyons School of Dance, to operating his own studio called the Theater Arts School of Dance, Jim trained little children as well as adults, with this passion and talent for dance, which he enjoyed tremendously, for over 50 years.
Jim adored his mother and took such very good care of her. He even renovated her aging home and added a swimming pool and patio so she could live like “Hollywood Royalty.”
He received many accolades over his life for his dedication and determination. As proclaimed by Mayor Menino, “Jim “Tony” Collins has proven to be the ultimate professional and a role model for dancers of the future.”
Along with his many other talents, Jim was an outstanding artist and teacher of painting. The Carver Selectboard honored him for over 20 years of service to the community of Carver, providing painting workshops to Seniors at the Carver Council of Aging.
Jim has left behind a legacy that has inspired thousands! He will be missed.
Visitng hours will be held on Thursday, November 21st from 9-11:00 AM at the Shepherd Funeral Home, 116 Main St (Rt. 58) Carver. A graveside gathering will follow at 11:00 AM at Central cemetery in Carver.
