Obituary of James M Gibbons

Please share a memory of James to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

James (Jim) Matthew Gibbons III, beloved son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on October 14, 2024 at the age of 81. Born on January 14, 1943, in Winchester, Massachusetts, Jim was the cherished son of June and James Gibbons Jr, and the devoted brother of Judith Cole. He grew up in a close-knit family where he developed his lifelong values of kindness, integrity, and hard work.

A proud veteran, Jim served in the U.S. Army for four years, during which time he met the love of his life, Hannelore (Laurie) Vollweiter, while stationed in Germany. They married in NY City and three years later welcomed their son James Matthew Gibbons IV, into their lives. Later on, Jim’s legacy continues with his three grandchildren, Hailey, Jack and Libby, whom he loved deeply.

Jim’s professional career began at Lincoln Lab, (part of MIT), where he worked as a computer operator for several years. He then transitioned to a role as an office manager at Raytheon, continuing to make valuable contributions in the field of computer operations.

Beyond his professional life, Jim was passionate about animals, the outdoors, and wildlife. His playful spirit was highlighted by the time he nurtured an injured goose in his shed for several months and kept it safe from the cold winter. In addition, Jim spent years crafting a fountain in his backyard, a special place where his grandchildren would release the turtles he taught them to catch.

While he had a knack for saying things that would sometimes leave us shaking our heads, he never failed to make us laugh.

He will be deeply missed by his family and all who know him, remembered for his generosity, kindness and the laughter he brought to their lives.

At the family’s request funeral services will be held privately.
