Obituary of Mary Jane Ferson

Please share a memory of Mary Jane to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Mary Jane Ferson, 82, of Duxbury, MA, passed away peacefully on August 27, 2024 at South Shore Hospital, Weymouth, MA after a brief illness.  She will be greatly missed by all who loved her.

She was born in Newton, MA to Edward and Grace Becherer on April 30, 1942.  She attended Newton Country Day School of the Sacred Heart and Newton College (Class of 1963).  She met the love of her life, William A Ferson (Bill) in 1967 through the Catholic Graduates Club.  They were married in 1969 in the chapel at Newton College (now Boston College Law School campus).  They went on to have three children, Richard, Amy and Elizabeth whom she loved immeasurably.

She moved to Duxbury, MA with her family in 1978, loved every minute of it, and lived there until her passing.  She worked for Battelle Ocean Sciences in Duxbury for 23 years in Human Resources.  She loved her job and had deep friendships with her coworkers.

She was a devout Catholic, had a powerful love of God and was a member of the Holy Family Parish since moving to Duxbury.  She loved attending weekly masses and singing the hymns from her church pew.

She had many passions and hobbies.  She was integral in the founding and annual planning of the Duxbury School science fairs and Duxbury Beach Sweeps.  She was also on the Duxbury Fourth of July Parade Committee for many years.  She was a “homebody” by nature and didn’t feel the need to travel much but loved the Duxbury community and always gave of her time when she could.

She was most known for her loving and kind spirit.  She was forever trying her best to help others who were less fortunate.  She was a giver through and through and never wanted more than what she had.

In her later years she looked forward to her famous yard sales, spent many hours crocheting hats for cancer patients at the hospitals, attended the Duxbury Fourth of July Parade each season, admired the hummingbirds feeding at her front window and relished her annual trip to Marco Island, FL.

Mary Jane is survived by her son Richard Ferson of Duxbury, daughter Elizabeth Ferson of Duxbury, daughter Amy Asbedian and husband Jamie of Duxbury, her grandchildren Will, Grace and Alex Asbedian, her sister Betsy Minnar and husband Peter of Hanson, MA, her brother Richard Becherer and longtime partner Peggy Rich of West Yarmouth, MA, her sister-in-law Ann Strzelewicz of Palm Coast, FL and many nieces and nephews.  She is preceded in death by her husband Bill, and her parents Edward and Grace Becherer.

Visitation will be held at the Shepherd Funeral Home in Kingston, MA from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 7 followed by a funeral service to honor her beautiful life and reunion with God at Holy Family Church, 601 Tremont Street, Duxbury at 11:00 a.m.  Burial will follow at the Mayflower Cemetery in Duxbury across from the church.  All who knew her are welcomed to attend.
