Obituary of Francis James Casey

Please share a memory of Francis to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Francis Casey, age 77, of Carver, passed away peacefully on July 18, 2024, surrounded by his family and his caretakers at the Hannah B.G. Shaw Home.  Born on January 30, 1947, in Brockton, MA to the late Bernard and Ann (Franey) Casey.  Frank was the older brother to Edward Casey of Easton, the late Patricia (Casey) Smith of Rockland, and Marie Casey of Canton.

Frank proudly served in the U.S. Army 101st Airborne Division during the Vietnam War.  Following his service to our country, he married Mary Ellen (O’Brien) Casey, with whom he shared 47 years of marriage, prior to her passing in 2022.  They built their life together in Carver where they raised two daughters, Erin-Marie and Meredith.

Frank was a true “people-person”, with an Irish gift of gab and was the happiest surrounded by those he loved.  These traits served him well in his professional life, first as a salesman of McCarthy’s Ice Cream in Whitman and later as a dedicated U.S. Post Office employee.  Frank was most dedicated to his community.  He served as a Selectman for the Town of Carver for 12 years, six as Chair.  Frank also served on Carver’s Industrial Development Commission; the North Carver Landfill Oversight Committee; the Plymouth County Advisory Board, the Carver Animal Shelter Committee; and the Carver Housing Trust.  Frank was also very proud to have served on the Board of Directors for 11 years for the South Shore Community Action Council.  He also served in a variety of roles at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Carver and coached numerous youth sports teams.

Frank always took the time to offer his help, a smile, or a kind word.  He held true to the values of hard work, quiet grace, and how to do the right thing no matter what.  Frank always led with an open heart and was grounded in love, loyalty, and service to others.

Frank is survived by his daughters, Erin-Marie Oakham, and her husband, Gary; and Meredith Hurley, her husband, Brian, and his cherished grandchildren, Connor, Fallon, and Jack.  He is also survived by his brother Edward Casey, brother-in-law Richard Smith, sister Marie Casey, and brother-in-law Richard O’Brien.  Frank also is survived by numerous cousins and his two nieces, Sarah (Smith) Collins, her husband, Matthew and great-nephew Quinten; and Colleen Smith.

In the most recent years, Frank was a resident at Stafford Hill in Plymouth and Hannah B.G. Shaw Home in Middleboro.  Words cannot express our gratitude for the dedicated caretakers and staff who created a wonderful world for him to live and thrive in.

Services will be held on Wednesday, July 24th from 4p-7p at the Shepherd Funeral Home located at 116 Main St. Carver, MA.  A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, July 25th at 10:30am at St. Bridget’s Parish located at 455 Plymouth St., Abington, MA.  Internment will be at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne, MA at a later date.

In Lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Hannah B.G. Shaw Home- Activities, 299 Wareham Street in Middleboro, MA 02346. Gift of Giving — The Shaw Home
