Obituary of Sylvia May Butters
Sylvia May (Loring) Butters, age 85 of Kingston, MA passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of her family on July 4, 2024.
Sylvia was the daughter of Ruth and Richard Loring. She was the loving wife of the late James Butters for 51 years. Devoted mother to Donna Eldridge of Kingston, MA, and Lynda Butters-Bertram of North Port, Florida. Mother-in-law to Peter Eldridge. Nana to granddaughters Aimee Gibbons and husband Joe, Leanne Eldridge, and Emily Bertram. Nan to great-grandchildren James and Audrey Gibbons. She was also survived by her brother Richard Loring, wife Linda, and their children Amy Belmore and Greg Loring. She also leaves many nieces and nephews.
After graduating from Silver Lake Regional High School, she attended Boston University and pursued a lifelong career teaching physical education in Plymouth and Carver. She was the first Worthy Advisor for the Plymouth International Order of Rainbow for Girls and a member of the Massachusetts Order of the Eastern Star. After her many years of playing sports and coaching, she could still be found on the sidelines of a sports field watching the kids in her family play sports. She loved camping and traveled the country with Jim in their RV, spending many summer weeks in Wells Maine. The Fall always brought visits to the many family cranberry bogs during picking season.
Sylvia resided in Kingston her entire life but enjoyed many winters in Davenport, Florida. She developed many friendships and enjoyed playing Bingo, mystery lunch outings, playing card games, Cruise trips around the world, and being a kid again in Disney World.
Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, July 18, 2024, from 4:00 – 8:00 PM at Shepherds Funeral Home, 216 Main Street, Kingston, MA. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, July 19, 2024, at 10:00 AM at the First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church, 223 Main Street, Kingston, MA.
