Barbara C. DeLory, 97

Barbara Patricia (Callahan) DeLory of Duxbury, passed away on June 5th in the comfort of her home after living a full life.

She was born in Providence, RI to William H. Callahan and Marion (Keith) Callahan; the youngest of four children. She attended Boston University, Sargent College, majoring in Physical Education. While in college, she worked summers on Cape Cod where she met the love of her life – David. They married and were together for 70 years.

Barbara taught Physical Education for several years, then held administrative positions at Continental Can Corp., the Jenney Grist Mill and the Plymouth National Wax Museum. Over the years she spent many hours volunteering at the South Shore Natural Science Center, Duxbury Thrift Shop, Talking Information Center, and Standish Humane Society (where she volunteered weekly well into her eighties!).

She enjoyed tennis, bird watching, gardening, Nature, cooking (she was a fabulous cook!), travel, reading, beach combing, and days on Cape Cod Bay aboard the “Swan Song”. She was also a faithful letter writer, keeping in touch with family/friends spread far and wide around the globe. Love of family also extended to the many cats, dogs, horses, sheep and goat (with the occasional opossum, chipmunk or raccoon foundling) that shared her home over the years. She always supported the hobbies and dreams of her husband and daughter (boats, fishing, the Jenney Grist Mill, Girl Scouts, 4-H, horse shows, dog shows…never a dull moment!). Her politeness and quick wit were with her to the very end.

Predeceased by her husband, David E. DeLory, and her siblings: John Callahan, Claire (Callahan) Healy, and Marilyn (Callahan) Kindelan.  Survived by her daughter, Kimberly (DeLory) Hatton, and son-in-law, Daniel Hatton of Pembroke; four nieces, five nephews, and their families.

There will be an hour of visitation starting at 6:00 PM on June 20th at the Shepherd Funeral Home, 216 Main St (Rt. 106) in Kingston with a celebration of life service set to begin at 7:00 PM.  In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Cranberry Hospice, 36 Cordage Park Circle, Plymouth, MA 02360 OR Standish Humane Society, PO Box 634, Duxbury, MA  02331.
