Obituary of William E. Hannon

Please share a memory of William to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

William E. Hannon, “Bill”, 84, of Duxbury passed away on August 31, 2023.

Bill was born in Boston in 1938 the son of Frederick and Caterine (Bubinski) Hannon. He was a very proud graduate of Boston Latin School, class of 1956 and attended many of his high school reunions.  He went on to earn a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Engineering from Northeastern University. Bill married his wife Eunice (Connolly) on April 28, 1962 at Presentation Church in Brighton.

Bill started his career at Joe Poor’s drug store in Allston and remembered his time there fondly. His early engineering jobs were at Ryerson Steel in Allston and Avco before embarking on a long career at Raytheon Corp. (Bill’s stories of his time at Raytheon were well-known in the family).

Had three children Kathleen of Dedham, Bill of Harwich Port, and Dave (and Doris) of West Roxbury, two granddaughters Jenny and Julie Lawton who he adored. He also had four nieces and nephews who were in his thoughts often. Bill also had one older brother, the late Frederick Hannon

Bill and Eunice lived for 30 years in Chelmsford, Mass. before they retired to Duxbury, Mass. in 1996.

Bill made the most of his long retirement. He and Eunice travelled extensively in their retirement on trips to Alaska, Hawaii, Italy, Ireland, and other destinations.

Perhaps Bill’s crowning achievement in retirement was becoming a Life Master bridge player. He enjoyed many (many) hours of enjoyment playing bridge the Puritan Bridge Club in Braintree as well as tournaments all over Massachusetts. He really enjoyed the game and even more the great people and friends he met playing. Bill was a lifelong Bruins, Patriots and Red Sox fan – even in the days when they weren’t very good!

The Hannon family would like to thank the kind staff at Bridges in Pembroke and Southwood at Norwell for their compassionate and thoughtful care. And a special thank you to Andrew DeGrazia and Rocco for their tireless efforts to make Bill’s final year more enjoyable.

Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, September 6th, from 4-8:00 PM at the Shepherd Funeral Home, 216 Main St (Rt. 106) Kingston. A funeral mass will be held on Thursday, September 7th at 10:00 AM at Holy Family Church, 601 Tremont ST, Duxbury. A graveside service will follow at Mayflower cemetery in Duxbury.

Donations can be made to The Alzheimer’s Association And The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
