Obituary of Larry Stewart Apple

Larry Stewart Apple died on March 12, 2023 at South Shore Hospital surrounded by his wife Dona and his son Tucker after a courageous and hard fought six month battle with cancer. Dona and Tucker would like to thank the caring professionals at the Dana Farber Cancer Center/South Shore, Norwell VNA, Dr. David Chiang, Dr. Timothy Lynch and Dr. Philip Wade for their care, compassion, friendship, and wise counsel during this most difficult time.

Larry leaves behind his wife of 53 years, Dona, his son, Tucker Stewart Apple and his brother James Richard (Rick). Larry is predeceased by his parents, Edward Stewart and Leola Long Apple, brothers Gary Dale Apple and Jeffery Patrick Apple and his cherished granddaughter Olivia Rae Apple.

Larry was born on May 20, 1947 in Granville, Tennessee, the oldest of four boys. He was born in the house that his father and grandfather built on the family farm.   He attended Two Rivers High School where he was the drum major for the marching band.  He graduated from Tennessee Technological University and received his MBA in business and finance from the Owens Graduate School at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. Larry worked his entire career in National Accounts (sales and marketing) for Jack Daniels Distillery/Brown Foreman Beverage.  He travelled the world but his favorite place was on or near the sea.

He was known for his sense of humor, his intellect, and his evening cocktail.  There was nothing he would not do for his family.  He was always so proud of Tucker and the man he has become. Knowing that lilies are Dona’s favorite flower, he planted every type and color on their property for her to enjoy.  Larry left his family a lifetime of smiles and happy memories.

Larry was a true Southern gentleman who had many hobbies and interests during his life.  As a young man he was the saxophonist for the Squires Showband in Nashville.  He also enjoyed riding dirt bikes with his brothers. In later years he grew and bred orchids.  He was an avid reader and had his first library card at age 5. Whenever the family would move, Larry’s first act was going to the local library.  He was a consummate sailor who loved the sea and spent countless hours on his sailboat, A Frayed Knot II.   Larry embraced New England in the 1980’s and was a Patriots and Red Sox fan.  He cherished the family trips to the White Mountains and Nantucket.   He loved all types of music, a thread that ran through his entire life.  In later years, Tucker gave his dad a bass guitar and amp and Larry spent many hours learning to play the bass and the neighbors often enjoyed hearing him play his favorite music.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations to The Kingston Public Library, 6 Green Street, Kingston, Massachusetts 02364 or the Plymouth Area Coalition for the Homeless (Attn: S. Giovanetti)149 Bishops Highway, Kingston, Massachusetts 02364.   Visitation will be held Saturday, April 1 from 2:00-4:00 with a brief service from 4:00-4:30 at Shepherd’s Funeral Home.
