Sarah Gellatly O’Rourke

June 5th, 1960- February 13, 2023

Sarah Gellatly O’Rourke, 62, of Duxbury, MA passed away on Monday, February 13, 2023, surrounded by family after a hard-fought battle with colon cancer.

Sarah was born on June 5th, 1960, in Hudson, Ohio to Carole and Peter Gellatly. Sarah was the youngest of her five siblings, PD, David, Lisa, and Wendy. She made friends and memories in the many places her family lived and vacationed, including New Canaan, CT, Chatham, MA, and Hingham, MA, where she graduated high school in 1978. She attended the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, where she met her “Doobie Sisters”.

In 1984, Sarah met her husband Patrick O’Rourke of Weymouth, MA, through a mutual friend. They were married in August of 1990 and had a beautiful, loving marriage of 32 years. They began their life together in Rockland, MA, and later moved to Duxbury, MA. Sarah and Patrick went on to have two children, Caroline, and Kevin O’Rourke. Sarah and Patrick’s devotion to and admiration for one another was a wonderful example of love for their children and others around them.

Sarah worked for many years at Fiduciary Trust Company before choosing to be a stay-at-home mother. She made the most of that time with her children, creating the most wonderful memories that they will cherish forever. When her children were older, she became a substitute teacher for the Rockland school system, and later worked at The Village at Duxbury in the cafe, where she made lifelong friends.

Sarah was a joyful, loving, and beautiful soul. She cared deeply about her family, friends, and each person that came into her life. She was an empathetic listener with an infectious smile, who could always make you feel better with a few kind words, a joke, or a hug. Music was one of her greatest passions and was an almost constant comfort in her life, whether she was attending a concert, singing along to a CD in the car, or dancing in the kitchen with her husband. She enjoyed “Sisters Weekend” getaways with her sisters Lisa and Wendy, spending time in New Hampshire with “The Gang”, and nights out in Plymouth with her girlfriends. She dedicated a great deal of her life to volunteer work, including time at Meals on Wheels in Rockland, the Duxbury Senior Center, and the Standish Humane Society. Her love of music, the beach, books, and nature has been passed onto her children.

Sarah is predeceased by her parents, Carole and Peter, and her brother PD. She is survived by her loving husband, Patrick, her children Caroline and Kevin, her sisters Wendy and Lisa, her brother David, many nieces and nephews, and her wonderful friends.

Services will be held from 4 to 8pm on Thursday, February 23, 2023 at Shepherd Funeral Home in Kingston, MA.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Duxbury Free Library in honor of Sarah’s love of sharing books, movies, and music.
