Obituary of Horatio Green
Horatio Green, age 84, passed away peacefully at his home in Bryantville on September 13 after a year-long battle with cancer. He was the son of the late William A. Green and Alma C. (McCormack) Green of Bryantville. He grew up at his home in Bryantville which has been in his family for many generations. It was there that he shared childhood adventures with his brother, Robert, and his late sister Nancy. He graduated from Pembroke High School and Berklee College of Music where he further developed his love of the trumpet, piano, guitar, and scoring composition. He had a lifelong love of music, specifically jazz, and enjoyed many years as a traveling jazz musician playing his trumpet. While working at the Harvard Club in Boston, he met the love of his life, Kathy. They married in 1963 which marked the beginning of their 59-year marriage and grew a loving family with their five children . He then worked as a food service manager for Sodexho Corporation servicing hospitals throughout the Northeast for 44 years. He worked hard but had many interests that brought him joy. In addition to music, he loved nature and all living things. He loved bicycling, photography, and reading. He also enjoyed writing and for many years was a contributing writer online for Yahoo as well as local newspapers. Through the eyes of others, he was often quiet and reserved but he would say that he preferred to just sit back and observe. He didn’t love fanfare or excess but rather appreciated the sincerity and quieter, more intimate moments with people. He believed in leading by example and demonstrated that every day. He was the greatest example of how to love unconditionally and respect others through his love and care for his wife and his family. He experienced tremendous joy through his grandchildren. He was thoughtful and intentional in all that he did. He was not a religious man yet he was spiritual. He once said that he could be anywhere in this world by himself, in the middle of nowhere, but he would never feel alone. That is now true for those who loved him who will feel both his loss and presence, always.
Horatio is survived by his wife, Kathleen (Portanova), his four sons William, Robert, and Joseph of Pembroke, Horatio Scott and his wife Nicole (Shiner) of Wilton, NH, his daughter Lisa Marie of Milton, grandchildren Sherry, Rebecca, Candice, Krystin (Sullivan), Amanda, Horatio Ryan, Myles, and Lucas, great-grandchildren Isabella and Anthony, and brother Robert. He is preceded in death by sister Nancy (Vernazzaro), and grandson Adam. A memorial mass will be held for Horatio at a future date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made in Horatio’s name to The Brain Aneurysm Foundation, bafound.org, 269 Hanover Street #3 Hanover, MA 02339, or Cranberry Hospice & Palliative Care of Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital, 275 Sandwich Street, Plymouth, MA 02360.
