I have many fond memories of John as he was my manager at IBM for a number of years. He was a great help to my career at IBM and we kept in contact over the years. I am deeply saddened by his passing and extend my condolences to the Szafran family.

We were out on Uncle John's Grady White Ocean fishing and I hooked a huge Manta Ray that was bigger than the boat. It was a frightening experience for me being a wee lad. I remember Uncle John swooping in to save the day cut the line and the big old fish swam so gracefully away. Thank you Uncle John for being a hero to me and inspiring me to lead a more exploratory life!

Our entire family is saddened by the news of Johns passing. Our prayers reach out to the entire Szafran family with love and condolences. Rosemary, please know we especially hold you close to our heart. As his neighbor of over 30 years we found John to be a man of integrity and compassion. I was shocked when Rosemary told me the sad news. I had known that recently John was suffering repercussions from the radiation treatment, but I just assumed that the complications could be taken care of. I will miss John. We had a long history of sparring from the Acton days – it just happened that we saw many things from different perspectives. It was all good fun, and good to look forward to. To all the Szafran’s: I join you with my sympathy and prayers as you grieve and process this very sorrowful event. Christine Ryan
