Clark was a legend long before I ever met him. My mother, Barbara Keay, shared many fond memories of growing up in Plymouth, and Clark was often part of those stories. Later in life, I had the privledge of meeting him in person, and he was every bit as warm, humourous, and kind as her stories suggested.
I only learned of his passing just now, but wanted to say how grateful I am for the wonderful times that he gave to my mother, and for so generously welcoming me into his life even after she passed. Today, a candle (cranberry scented, of course!) glows for Clark in our home in the Netherlands.

Clark and I met the first day of our freshman year at Bates College in 1949. We were to be room mates in Parker Hall, My parents drove me up the day before from our home in Hartford. They were helping me settle in when Clark arrived. My memore is he walked in and said, "Hi, I'm Clark Griffith." We became friends for life.
An almost untold story. Several years later England was crowning a new Queen. Our dorm maid (another era) was Mae, an English woman. The 'crew' on our floor unit arranged to get up early and get food for all at the breakfast line.
Clark had a Hallicrafters short radio with a long antenna out the back dorm window. Mae was able to listen to the Coronation live from the BBC.
That first week as we compared 'histories' I said my dad sold fire engines made by Maxim Motors in Middleboro, Mass. Clark told me about the 'brush breaker' models used in the Massachusetts bogs.
We both liked the music played on the phono I brought. Clark called his favorite, BPOAFC (Boston Pops Orchestra, Arthur Fielder conducting.
I'm wearing a Bates Class of 1953 vest, a gift from the college when attended our Sapphire reunion. After the reunion I stayed a few nights with Clark before heading home to Berkeley, California.
Another memory, I introduced Clark to Gerry Dyar my high school buddy who went to MIT. They were a match and became friends and colleagues for life.

I didn't know Clark for many years but I am sure glad i had the time with him that I did. I am going to miss his smile, laugh, kindness and most of all his stories. No matter how many times he told me the same story over again, I still sat and listened like it was the first time because he made me happy to be there with him. There wasn't a minute i regretted in the time I spent with him and I would give anything to have just a minute more. I am thankful for the memories and I will cherish them all. I will cry now but laugh later when I think of him and the great times we spent together. I love you Clark and miss you already.
