Scituate

Edie Winship (Fernandes) died peacefully June 20, 2019 at LifeCare Center of the South Shore.

Edie was the youngest child of Joseph and Virginia (Camara) Fernandes, immigrants from Madeira, Portugal.  While proud of her heritage and her parents’ legacy, she worked hard to make a place for herself beyond the traditional expectations for a first generation American Farmer’s Daughter in the 1950’s.  Edie was born in Berkley, MA on November 4,1934; she graduated Dighton High School in 1952 and went on to earn Certified Professional Secretary status.  She had been employed as a secretary, personnel director, and office manager to more interesting people than her favorite author, Agatha Christie would lock in a room together; Doctors, Lawyers, Ministers, Rabbi, and Funeral Directors - it is no wonder she finally became a published author in 2011 with the release of Carpenter House.

She lived in Easton for over 30 years where she was an active member of the Covenant Congregational Church.  She also spent 10 years involved with Learn to Skate Program at the Skating Club of Hingham in an advisory role.   She loved Genealogical research and Antiquing, which later played a major role in the plot of her novel.

Becoming a Grandmother presented her with the opportunity to share her interests with the next generation.  Edie enjoyed watching her granddaughter sing, dance and perform, and was in the audience whenever she was able.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 33 years, Donald S. Winship, Jr..  Edie  leaves behind her daughter Meredith and her husband Jeff, and her cherished granddaughter, Sydney, of Carver.  She also leaves behind her sister Connie  (Fernandes) Sylvain of Buzzards Bay, along with more than one hundred nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by her brothers Joseph and John Fernandes, and her sisters Mae (Fernandes) Breault, Victoria  (Fernandes) Davis, and Laura (Fernandes) Lefaivre.

A memorial gathering will be held later in the summer at Shepherd Funeral Home in Carver.

As she was involved as much as she could be, she had asked that Memorial Donations may be made to Warren’s Warriors, ℅ Zero - The End of Prostate Cancer, 515 King Street, Suite 420, Alexandria, VA 22314
