Obituary of Fred A. Allen

Please share a memory of Fred to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Fred Allen, 74, of Pembroke, passed away after a brief battle with cancer, while surrounded by family, on Saturday, February 2, 2019.  Fred was born in Weymouth, MA on March 21, 1944 to Horace and Doris (Thayer) Allen.    Fred was one of eight children and resided in Hanover, moving to Pembroke in his early adult years where he resided until his death.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Carole (Holyoke) Allen, his daughters, Julie Welch, Diana Demarco, Barbara Ruffell, and Judith Dunn Hogan.  Siblings include Roberta Lynch, Barbara Hassett, Dorothy Peterson, Robert Allen, and Eldridge (Brother) Allen.  He was predeceased by his siblings, Lorna Allen and Margaret (Peggy) Snyder.  Fred has nine grandchildren that he cherished, Cameron Allen Miglietta, Samantha Miglietta, Joshua Dunn, Connor Dunn, Patrick Ruffell, Arron Ruffell, JenniferHogan, Eric Hogan, and Cory Hogan.

Fred worked as a master carpenter for most of his career, including a long history at the Boston Whaler in Rockland where he was a foreman in the wood division.  He brought this creativity and love of working with all kinds of wood to those around him making china cabinets, treasure chests, step stools, bookcases, and his own kitchen cabinets from beautiful Cherrywood scraps he brought home from the Whaler.  He loved spending time with his family fishing, water-skiing, canoeing, and boating on Oldham Pond, and the North River.   He was an avid gardener and his yard was always full of beautiful blooms and a vegetable garden.  He loved to cook and enjoyed being in “control” of the household.   He LOVED his sweets and a good CC & Ginger cocktail at family holiday parties.  After a near miss on his life from illness in 1994, he always joked that “He was living on borrowed time” and enjoyed the additional years he was blessed to be with his family, watching his grand-children grow into teens and young adults.  He will be greatly missed by all those who knew him but lives on through the wonderful children and grand-children he helped shape into the wonderful humans they are today.

Visiting hours will be held on Friday, February 8th, from 4-8 p.m. at the Shepherd  Funeral Home, 7 Mattakesett Street, Pembroke, MA.  Burial Service will follow on Saturday, February 9th, at Pembroke Center Cemetery, at 11:00 a.m.  All family, friends, and loved ones are invited to attend and share their wonderful memories as we celebrate his life.
