First of all, JoAnn and I want to express our sincere condolences. We wish we could be there to express our sympathy in person, however know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. Here are some of my favorite memories of Uncle Bobby. We went to the house on Man Hill Road and he was driving a shaft out of an engine with a sledge hammer. I think it would normally take a hydraulic press for this kind of job, but he just slowly hammered it out. The first time I ever drove a car I was about 10. I was sitting on his lap in the MG TD and he let me steer. I was about to cut off a truck and he calmly took control. On several occasions when I worked for Burkhardt Brothers we’d be on some big job and the end was not in sight. He’d show up in another truck with two guys like Eddie DeNorfrio and Mike Russo. It was like the cavalry showed up! The job would be finish up so quick! There were times when Dad and Uncle Bobby worked together and it was like watching two masters move some bomb like a piano or monster hideabed. I remember I’d stop to watch them. When my mom was sick Uncle Bobby and Aunt Diana let me live with them for a while. I felt right at home. Finally, a few years back Uncle Bobby and Sally came to visit me at the Washington Navy Yard to go to the Marine Corps History Library. He was looking for a picture of Easy Company taken in Korea by David Douglas Duncan. We couldn’t find that picture, but we did find a picture of him on the deck of USS GEORGE CLYMER (APA-27). We spent a few hours looking through many pictures in the Korean War Photos files. I wish someone had recorded all he said. The one I remember most showed a Medal of Honor marine scaling a ladder during the Battle of Inchon. Uncle Bobby’s comment was “Who do you think put the ladders there?” Semper Fi.

I have been told that my Uncle Bobby had a challenging childhood that propelled him to join the Marine Corps at age 17. Two years later, and still a teenager, he found himself at the Chosin Reservoir in Korea at the beginning of one of the great battles in US military history. Fighting against overwhelming odds and bitter cold weather, Bobby and his fellow Marines performed the unthinkable and fought their way out of an impossible situation to safety over four long days. This experience would virtually free him from fear for the rest of his life and forge an immensely confident man. He would employ his Marine honor code, tireless work ethic and fearlessness to succeed at every challenge he attempted or faced. His loss is painful in many ways and sadly reminds us that men with his courage, principle and ilk are fading from our world. We will always be proud to have known such an honorable man.
