Obituary of F. Sherburne Carter

F. Sherburne Carter Sr. passed away December 15, 2010. He was born March 11, 1920, in Boston MA and resided in Duxbury MA for the past 50 years. He attended Philips Exeter Academy and Brown University. After serving in the Navy in WW II as a Lieutenant Commander and aircraft carrier pilot, he graduated from Boston University with a degree in Accounting. Mr. Carter worked for New England Tel &Tel for 25 years where he was Division Manager responsible for producing the Yellow Pages. In retirement he owned the Indian Pond Cranberry Corporation and worked with his sons in Carter Cranberry. He became interested in making Shaker furniture and produced beautiful pieces for members of the family at his workshop in Kingston. His last project was a memorial plaque for St. John's Episcopal Church, completed two months before his death. He was an avid sailor throughout his life and he and his wife spent every summer cruising the coast and Buzzard Bay area on his sailboat Gunhild until 2005. He served as Secretary for the Duxbury Yacht Club where he was awarded the Visitors Cup for outstanding service. While Commodore of the Blue Water Sailing Club, he helped inaugurate the biennial race from Marion to Bermuda, in which he skippered the Gunhild three times. He was also a member of the Beverly Yacht Club in Marion and the Second Club in Boston. His family and friends will remember his wit and how much fun he was to be with. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Shirley Hanson Carter, his daughter Carol Shilepsky, his son Lyon Carter II, grandchildren Lisa Van Raalte, Beth Price, Lyon Carter III, Christian Carter, Alexandra Carter, and Max Carter and 4 great grandchildren. He was predeceased in November 2009 by his son, F. Sherburne Carter Jr. A service will be held at 11 am on Tuesday, December 28, at St. John's Episcopal Church in Duxbury. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be sent to Jordan Hospital in Plymouth MA.
