Obituary of Martha Alexander

Martha W. Alexander of Duxbury, MA died at Bay Path Nursing Home Duxbury, MA on October 10th. She was 87. Born Martha Wilma Nickerson in Nova Scotia in 1923. Daughter of Ada Mae & Raymond Nickerson and sister of Alma Chandler-Cameron and brother of Victor D. Nickerson, all deceased. She was married to Paul R. Morrison and Harold Alexander, both deceased. The Nickerson family moved to Malden, MA from Nova Scotia in 1926 and then to Duxbury in 1933 with the Kenney and Hazlehurst families. The Nickerson’s resided above Sweetsers General Store in the 30’s & 40’s. She graduated from Duxbury High School in 1941 then attended a Boston business school for 2 years. During WW II, she served in the US Navy WAVES at the Boston Navy Yard. Over the years she worked at the Hanover Munitions Plant, The Plymouth Cordage Co. and was the Assistant Post Mistress at the Duxbury P.O. for 17 years. She also co-owned and operated Marie & Martha’s Hot Dog Stand with Marie Arnold at the Marshfield Fairgrounds in the early 1960‘s. She then was the co-owner and operator of the Hobomock Inn, in Pembroke, MA for 10 years with her then husband, Paul Morrison. She also worked as bookkeeper at the Angelo’s Supermarket in Wareham, MA. She resided in Bradenton, FL in the 1980’s and was married to Harold Alexander (1989-1993). She resided in St. Catherines, Ontario Canada for a few years until his death in 1993. She was very active in many shuffleboard tournaments in Canada & Florida. She then returned to Duxbury and worked as a receptionist at Bay Path Nursing home in Duxbury for about a year and then retired. After retirement she continued her love of knitting, needlepoint, crochet and music. She also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. She was an accomplished organist and also played the guitar, piano, accordion and harmonica. She was an avid animal & bird lover and Red Sox fan. She had a great sense of humor. Martha Morrison was a member of the American Legion Post 233 Auxiliary Duxbury, MA. and Past Auxiliary Commander. She leaves a son; P. Tracy Morrison and his wife Susan (LaGreca-Morrison). Two grandsons; Paul Anthony Morrison and Kyle A. Morrison of Duxbury, MA. Cousin: Nancy Hazlehurst-Brock of Cary, NC. Nephew: Brian Chandler of Plymouth, MA, and a niece: Carol Chandler- LaPrade of Westboro, MA. Memorial visiting hours will be held Saturday October 30th from 10:30 am – 11:30 am at the Shepherd Funeral Home 216 Main St. (Rte 106) Kingston, MA with a service to follow at 11:30 am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cranberry Hospice of Plymouth, MA.
