This is a remembrance of you, Steve. You were born about two and a half months before me and as my cousin we were dear, great friends going back as far as I can remember.
I was deeply heartened and stunned to hear of your premature passing. My thoughts also go out to my uncle and godfather, John and your family as well as all others your life has touched and who feel a profound sense of loss. Steve, you were my namesake cousin (same first name) and I know that one of us spelt or full first name incorrectly, though I never figured who was mistaken.
I fondly remember growing up with you, boxing in your back yard, biking to the other's house and boating. We even made doubles water skiing virtually into a contact sport, whereby we'd carve into the water hurtling towards one or the other and attempt to cause the other to wipeout with the force of the spray from the water projected into the face as we turned to cut back across and jump the wake (Great fun, really).
We were always joking with playful or often satirical sarcasm or irony. Steve always seemed to have an off-the-cuff and amusing jab directed to whomever was in your sights. But I remember the ones directed to me the best. Sometimes when we would go for a run and it was decided that we'd sprint the last portion. Now understand, Steve was a fast sprinter and much faster than me. There was one time he quipped, “so what did you do, take the bus.” Pretty funny stuff when you’re simultaneously slumped over trying to catch your breath and laughing uncontrollably.
During high school it was so much fun competing against you in football but it was during hockey that it was the best as we had spent many years playing against or with the other on various teams. Invariably, we fully knew the others’ skill set and moves. There was a game during our senior year that I especially recall. There was a moment when I lined you up and executed what I thought was a particularly good check that sent you into the boards with a good amount of force. So of course, without missing a beat you wisecracked, “so what are you trying to do, swat flies?”
All during high school and for a while afterwards we played for the same team in the junior hockey league in Rockland. We were almost always paired together and since I have already mentioned we knew the other’s game so well, it was so much fun because we knew what the other would do and the high level of synergy complemented each other’s ability. Plus, we always had each other’s back, without failure. In a slight digression, that was particularly true when five of us cousins skated on the same team for a while as no affront was left unaccounted for. We had each other’s back, indeed.
After I had moved away about twenty-five years ago we sporadically saw one another over the years, generally at family wedding and other such events. Admittedly, we never kept in touch as much as we should have as we tended to our own lives. A few years back, we finally got back together one evening and with in moments it was as like we were transported back in time. We were joking and laughing about our lives and ourselves without missing a beat as if it was something we do all the time, even though it had probably been a decade or more since has seen one another.
I’ll never forget you, these few memories I mentioned here and the many more memories I’ll forever cherish as if they are etched in my mind and soul. Goodbye Steven, may you have comfort in your journey.
