Elizabeth “Betty” Goodrich Clark of Duxbury died on April 17 at the age of 91. She was the beloved mother of Ann Anderson, Nancy Clark, and the late Richard Clark, the grandmother of Phillip Anderson, and the great grandmother of Dylan Anderson, all of Duxbury. She was also the wife of the late William Pierce Clark for fifty-four years. She was born to Benjamin Franklin Goodrich and Iza Moore Goodrich in 1919 on their farm in Duxbury, where she spent most of her 91 years. Following her graduation from Northampton School for Girls and Mt. Holyoke College, she worked at Harvard University as a microbiologist during World War II. She married Bill Clark in 1945 after his escape from German prison camp, and they raised poultry and eggs on the family farm in Duxbury, now named Hobby Knoll Stables. Betty was a skilled horsewoman, who enjoyed jumping and riding the beaches and trails of the south shore. During the 1960s and 70s she was the leader of the Flying Mane 4-H Horse Club, and organized many area trail rides and horse shows. An adventurer who loved the open road, Betty later traveled extensively throughout the continent in her Airstream motor home, which she continued driving until her mid-eighties. She was a member of the Wally Byam Caravan Club International, the South Shore Antique Auto Club, the National Audubon Society, and was actively involved with the Duxbury Senior Center. A celebration of Betty’s life was held on Saturday, May 1 at the First Parish Unitarian Church in Duxbury. Memorial donations may be sent to: the Friends of the Duxbury Council on Aging, 10 Mayflower Street, Duxbury, MA 02332.
