She was born in Dutton, Ontario, and was the sister of the late John Murray Hockin of Nova Scotia and the late Harold William Hockin of London, Ontario. Mrs. Brown attended school in Dutton, followed by a year at Branksome Hall in Toronto. She graduated in 1949 with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Western Ontario in London, and worked in Toronto for Trans-Canada Air Lines until she married. Following a number of summers in the area, Mrs. Brown and her husband, the late William David (“Jim”) Brown, decided to make Duxbury their home. Mrs. Brown became a United States citizen in 1967 and, after staying home to raise her small children, she worked in the Alden Elementary School system for a number of years. She then returned to the travel business, first for Standish Travel, then for Travel Directions. Mrs. Brown retired in 1999 to enjoy reading, travel, and time with family and friends. She is survived by her son, W. David Brown of Pepper Pike, Ohio, and his wife, Sheila, by her daughter Amy H. (Brown) Annis of Duxbury, and her husband, Jeffrey, and by her four grandsons, Nicholas and Malcolm Brown, and William and Jonathan Annis. Mrs. Brown is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Mrs. Martha Currie of Vancouver, BC, and Mrs. Jean Hockin of Halifax, NS, by her brother-in-law, Mr. Alexander D. Mackay of Toronto, and by many nieces and nephews. Friends and family are respectfully invited to attend a memorial service at the Church of St. John the Evangelist, 416 Washington Street, Duxbury, on Saturday, August 8th at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Mrs. Brown’s memory to the Salvation Army (salvationarmy.org) or to the Friends of the Duxbury Free Library, P. O. Box 2092, Duxbury, MA 02331.
