Obituary of Matthew J. Mendes

Matthew J. Mendes Sr., of Carver died on July 14, 2009 at Jordan Hospital at the age of 81. He was the husband of Shirley A. (Hudlin) Mendes of Carver. Father of Matthew J. Mendes Jr of Plymouth, and Mark Mendes of Texas. Step-Father of Tonia Brandon of Carver. Brother of Regina Barros and foster son's Nelson and Leroy of Carver, Ernest Barros and his wife Lena of Carver and the late Catherin Barros and Lena Dono Barros. Uncle of Barbara Barros Waithe; daughter Lauren of Middleboro and the late Gordan W. Barros. Grandfather of Matthew J Mendes III, Allison, Troy and Jonathan. Matthew was born in Carver to the late Mary Barros and Manuel Mendes, he was a graduated of Carver Plymouth School system. He was a member of Local 51 Pipefitter's and Plumber's Union. Matthew was a World War II veteran in the Army, member of the Carver VFW, Knights of Columbus and the St John the Baptist Club. He was the Town of Carver Assessor for 31 years. Calling Hours will be held on Sunday, July 19, 2009 from 3-5 p.m., at the Shepherd Funeral Home, 116 Main St. (Rte. 58), Carver. Family and Friends are welcome to gather at the funeral home on Monday July 20, 2009 at 8 a.m., followed by a Mass at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, in Carver, at 9 a.m. Reception immediately following the Mass at the Carver VFW. All other services will be private.
