Obituary of Peter Lima

Peter Lima Sr., a longtime resident of Hanson, May 27, 2009. He was 85 years old. Mr. Lima was raised and educated in Hanson. He was employed for 30 years at the American Bilt-Rite Rubber Co. in Stoughton, and then in Norwood, where he was President of Local 156 United Rubber Workers Union. Mr. Lima was a pioneer of Cape Verdean music. He was the first musician to host local radio station WBET. He sang and played with numerous local Cape Verdean musicians including his own band. In recognition of his contribution to Cape Verdean music he received an honorary Cape Verdean music award in 2002, for his dedication, achievements, and support of all Cape Verdean musicians. He was elected chairman of the Hanson Finance Committee, and Supreme Treasurer for the Portuguese Continental Union of Boston, where he served for many years. Mr. Lima was also a member of the Knights of Columbus in Kingston. He loved to spend time with his grandchildren, his dog “Smokey”, and listening to Cape Verdean music. He will always be remembered for his thoughtfulness, loving heart, and smiling face.
Beloved husband of the late Irene Lima. Loving father of Doreen Martin Lima of Halifax, Gail Lima of Phoenix, AZ, Denise Souza and her husband Bruce of Hanson, and Peter Lima Jr. and his wife Racquel of Stafford, VA. Father-in-law of Frank Martin of Brockton. Brother of the late Carl Nielson, Phillip Nielson, Frederick Nielson, Antonio P. Lima Jr., and Isabelle Pina. Cherished grandfather of 12, and great grandfather of 4. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held on Monday, June 1st from 4-8:00PM at the Shepherd Funeral Home, 7 Mattakeesett St. (Rt. 14) Pembroke. A funeral mass will be held at Our Lady of the Lake in Halifax on Tuesday, June 2nd at 9:00AM. Internment will be at the St. Joseph cemetery in Kingston. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to: MSPCA-Angell, ATTN: Donations, 350 South Huntington Avenue, Boston, MA 02130.
