Obituary of George Burrows
Please share a memory of George to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
George Burrows, of Pembroke died on April 22, 2009. He was 83 years old. George Burrows was descended from many of the original settlers of Scituate. He married Miriam L. Arnold from Duxbury. After her death he lived in Marshfield and then added on to his daughters house in Pembroke where he stayed until his death at home. He had many friends in all of the S. Shore towns, and everyone knew him for his kindness. If ever someone wanted an odd piece of furniture made, George was the one to make it. “Pop” as he was known had always worked for himself, initially as a mason then tile setter and carpenter. He was a World War II veteran serving with the 2nd division Marines.
He was a wonderful storyteller of humorous tales of old Scituate. He felt honored at a recent breakfast for past SFD personnel, as his father died in the line of duty in 1925. Pop also had wonderful visits to Hawaii where his son, George Edward lived for many years.
Lately his main occupation was making breakfast for his great grandkids and driving them to school. Pop loved to drive his Nisan truck all around town and he was able to continue living his life without restrictions. He loved baseball and followed all the games on satellite tv. This love came from Uncle Robert Cole and it was a lifelong passion.
Pop was particularly proud of his granddaughter Stefanie who he took care of from the day of her birth. They were inseparable and when she was called to duty in Afghanistan in 2002 he took over her dog “Whooba” and cared for her with the same loving kindness, “How can anyone live without a dog?”
Those who loved Pop will miss him dearly as he complimented all our lives.
Husband of the late Miriam Burrows. Loving father of George E. Burrows of Thailand, and Rebecca B. Castanha and her husband Ron of Pembroke. Brother of Elmar Burrows of IN, and Barbara McIndoe of Plymouth. Grandfather of Wayne J. and Jennifer Castanha of Pembroke, Benjamin Castanha of Kingston, Stefanie Castanha of Pembroke, and the late Duke Castanha. Great grandfather of Paul D. Castanha, Leah G. Castanha, Joseph B Castanha, and Thomas W. Castanha. Uncle of Dana McIndoe and his wife Eileen of CT. Cousin of Peggy Kennedy Ames of NC, Jesse Monahan and Nancy Coyne both of Scituate, and Sh irley Parkhurst of Kingston.
