Obituary of Arthur Hopkins

Arthur Camp Hopkins, Jr., 88, passed away on Sunday, January 18, 2009 in Duxbury, MA. He was born in Cranford on December 11, 1920, the son of Arthur Camp Hopkins Sr. and Marjorie (Buckley) Hopkins. He was known to family and friends as “Camp”. Camp was predeceased by his two sisters, Mary Malvina Hopkins Taft (Molly) and Anne Hopkins Plummer. He leaves eight nieces and nephews, seventeen great nieces and nephews, and two great Great-Nieces and a great Great-Nephew.
Mr. Hopkins lived in Cranford for the majority of his life, initially on Hampton St. and later for over 40 years in the family home on Central Ave. He moved from Cranford in 2002 to be closer to family for his remaining years.
He attended Cranford public school, graduating from Cranford High School in 1938. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1942 with a degree in English Literature. He served in the US Army during World War II and was discharged as a sergeant in 1946 and spent the rest of his career working for General Motors Acceptance Corporation in New York City. Mr. Hopkins was also active with the Boy Scouts of America for much of his life, first as a scout himself and later as a long time adult volunteer. He received the following distinctions: Eagle Scout, Order of the Arrow Distinguished Service Award, and the Silver Beaver Award. As an adult Scouting volunteer, he attended numerous World Jamborees, having the opportunity at one of the jamborees to meet the King of Sweden, himself a former scout.
A private family service is planned. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Arthur’s memory to: Patriots Path Boy Scouts Council, 222 Columbia Tpke, Florham Park, NJ, 07932.
