Obituary of Joan J. Varley

Mrs. Joan Varley, of Pembroke, died after a short illness on November 25, 2008. She was 75 years old. She was born in Malden on April 30, 1933, daughter of the late Jesse James, and Anna Louise Withers. She was raised, educated, and married in S. Boston, and lived in Rockland and Hanson until moving to Pembroke 25 years ago. Mrs. Varley was a devoted homemaker who enjoyed always helping and taking care of others. She volunteered and substituted for Holy Family School and a previous Rockland PM Club member. She was employed by Brooks Pharmacy for many years and later a teacher’s aide at Center pre-school in Pembroke. She enjoyed her 57 years of marriage to her husband, and trips to Hawaii, St. Thomas, Bermuda, and Las Vegas. She is survived by her husband, Linus “Sam” Varley. Mother of June DelPrete and her late husband David, of Duxbury, Suzanne Brennan of Floyd, VA, Marsha Murphy and her husband John of Pembroke, Joanne White of Pembroke, Scott Varley and his wife De bbie of Plympton, and Todd Varley and his wife Brenda of Ocala, FL. Mother of the late Linda Sullivan and sister of the late Robert Withers, Sr. Grandmother of 30, and great-grandmother of 18. Loving aunt of Doris Lewis of VA, and sister-in-law of William Varley of FL. Visiting hours will be held on Friday, November 28th from 4-8:00 PM at the Shepherd Funeral Home, 7 Mattakeesett St. (Rt. 14) Pembroke. A funeral service will be held at the Shepherd Funeral Home on Saturday, November 29th at 10:00 AM. Burial will be at the Center Cemetery in Pembroke. Donations may be made in Joan’s name to: Cranberry Area Hospice, 36 Cordage Park Circle, Suite 326, Plymouth, MA 02360 and/or Leukemia Society, 495 Old Conneticut Path, Framingham, MA 01701.
