Obituary of Elizabeth Hirsch CDP

Sr. Elizabeth Hirsch, CDP, Sister of Divine Providence, of Kingston, died Nov. 3. She was 88. Born on Feb. 8, 1920 and baptized Elizabeth Monica Hirsch at St. Martin’s Church in West End, Pittsburgh, PA, she was one of Clara and Pius Hirsch’s four children. Her brother, “Father Joe”, her sister Marie, and her sister Florence (Dolly) preceded her in death. Dolly’s son Joseph Hoffman is her only surviving relative. Dolly’s daughter, Alverna, died several years ago. Elizabeth was very devoted to her family. On Aug. 30, 1936, Elizabeth entered the Community in Pittsburgh. As a novice, she was given the name Sr. Domitilla. After completing her novitiate in 1939, she taught in several schools in the Pittsburgh area until 1952 when she came to New England. She first taught at St. Cecilia’s School in Connecticut from 1952 until 1959. St. Joan of Arc School in Orleans on Cape Cod was her second New England mission. She taught grades 5 & 6 there until 1965, when she began her longest and most loved ministry at Sacred Heart Elementary School in Kingston. After serving as classroom teacher for a time, she fulfilled a longtime dream of earning a degree in Library Science from the University of Pittsburgh. She then served as the school’s librarian until her retirement in the 1990’s. Visiting hours on Thurs. Nov.6 at the Providence House, 363 Bishop’s Highway, Kingston from 2-5 and 6-7:30, with a Prayer Service at 7:30PM. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Fri. at the Providence House at 3:00PM. Interment in Our Lady of Divine Providence Cemetery, Kingston. Memorial donations may be made to the Lourdes Center, 363 Bishops Highway, Kingston, MA 02364.
