Obituary of Charles W. Lovejoy

Charles W. Lovejoy, Jr., 81, of Duxbury, MA, passed away Sunday, July 13th with his family at his side. He was born in 1927 in Rumford, ME and was the son of the late Charles W. and Constance D. Lovejoy. He graduated from Winchester High School in 1945 and then joined the Navy from 1945 – 1946. He graduated from Bowdoin College in 1950. While attending Bowdoin, Charlie was captain of the Bowdoin Polar Bears football team, a member of the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity and sang with their glee club, The Meddiebempsters.Upon graduation he was commissioned and recalled to active duty and attended the Naval Intelligence School in Washington DC. He was subsequently posted as Assistant U.S. Naval Attaché to the U.S. Embassy in Japan with the rank of Lieutenant, Senior Grade.
Following his Naval service, Charlie went to work as a stockbroker starting his career on Wall Street and later in Boston. In 1976 he started his own antique restoration business working with many local clients along with the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. He found the career change very rewarding as it touched on his passion for history, art and fine craftsmanship. In 1968 Charlie married Janet Spinney and they moved to Duxbury. He was an active participant in the community and was a member of the Duxbury Historical Society and the Duxbury Nuclear Advisory Committee.
Charlie was an avid reader of military history, military fiction, historical fiction and history. His other interests included miniature shipbuilding, bird watching, and the Red Sox.
He was a Vestryman of the Church of Epithany, New York City and later served as a trustee and Deacon of the Pilgrim Church in Duxbury.
Charlie leaves his wife Janet, daughter Susan B. LeBlanc of Doylestown, PA, son James M. Lovejoy of Bedford,. N.H. and daughter Constance D. Lovejoy of Duxbury, MA. He also leaves sister Virginia Allyn of Marion, MA and grandchildren Emily LeBlanc, Adrienne LeBlanc and Heather Lovejoy.
The funeral service and celebration of Charlie’s life will be held on July 26th at 1pm at Pilgrim Church of Duxbury on Washington Street.
