Roger G. Nieuwenhuis of Carver died on July 6, 2008. He was 78 years old. Mr. Nieuwenhuis was raised in the Midwest, and worked on his family’s farm while growing up. When he turned 18 years old he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. While stationed in Portsmouth, RI he met his wife, Dolores, at Dunnington’s in Taunton. He went on to spend 9 years serving in the Navy. He was a devoted husband to his late wife Dolores for 50 years. Following his time in the Navy, Mr. Nieuwenhuis worked for 27 years for the Western Union Corporation. He enjoyed following current world events, as well as closely following political news. Mr. Nieuwenhuis was a member of the American Legion Post 40 in Plymouth. Husband of the late Dolores Nieuwenhuis. Loving Father of Glenn N. Nieuwenhuis of Taunton, Karen M. Nieuwenhuis Rezendes of S. Dartmouth, Scott A. Nieuwenhuis of Taunton, and Craig S. Nieuwenhuis of RI. Brother of Blaine Nieuwenhuis of WA, and Blanche Petersen of CA. Grandfather of Alyssa Rezendes and Eric Rezendes both of S. Dartmouth, and Kaleigh Nieuwenhuis, Thomas Nieuwenhuis, and Daniel Nieuwenhuis all of Taunton. Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, July 9th from 4 – 8:00 PM at the Shepherd Funeral Home, 116 Main St (Rt 58) Carver. A graveside service will be held at the MA National Cemetery in Bourne on Thursday, July 10th at 1:00 PM. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to – Special Olympics Massachusetts - Dartmouth, which is a charity very close to Roger’s heart. Checks can be mailed to: SOMA, 66 Main St, Taunton, MA 02780.
