Please share a memory of Arthur to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Arthur P Mullaney 81, passed away peacefully on Jan 26, at home in Kingston, Ma, surrounded by his family. Arthur was born in Malden on May 20, 1936 to the late Edith and Arthur Mullaney. He graduated Malden Catholic High School in 1954 and went on to graduate Bates College in Lewiston Maine in 1958. He took a job on a cruise ship to Europe in 1959 where he met his sole-mate Judy Mullaney of Edina Minnesota. On August 20, 1960 he married Judy which was the start of their 57 year marriage He continued his education with by earning a Master’s Degree from Salem State College 1962. . Together they had three children, Jeff born Sept 25, 1962, Tim born April 11, 1964 and Lynn born March 25, 1970. Arthur and Judy started their family in Burlington before purchasing their home in Canton and remaining in Canton for over 30 years. Living in Canton they became part of a family, affectionately known as the Glendale Way Family. While in Canton Art worked as the Director of Guidance at Randolph High School. During 1970 he created the now known movement The Great American Smokeout. He started this project to get more students to college with the slogan “Light up a student’s future not a cigarette”. He also coached and was his sons biggest fan whether baseball or hockey. He built ice rinks and ice luges to sled down during the winter for all the neighborhood kids. Over the years during the summer he would proudly serve his perfected clam chowder and quahogs; both were second to none. He was also his daughters biggest fan either encouraging “thinking outside the box” or on the sidelines during soccer games. Arthur never stopped creating and helping students to further their education. In 1981 he created College Impressions to educate students about the differences between colleges while traveling around New England to truly enhance the college experience. He then expanded his teaching audiences by creating the College Impressions Newsletter. At the height of the Newsletter he had hundreds of schools subscribing with great enthusiasm to his Newsletter. He took the initiative to start an early morning program at Randolph High School to anyone interested in assistance with any of the college process steps. His strong passion for education led to a lifetime of guiding students to pursue their education. Arthur and Judy sold their home in Canton and built their dream home at the “Cove” in Kingston in 2003. As my father would say each morning at the Cove “It’s a good life” and “time is not my enemy”. He loved just sitting in the sun on the deck next to his wife overlooking the ocean. He embraced life and those in his life both family and friends. Arthurs family expanded over the years after his 3 children married to include two daughter in laws and one son in law and 5 cherished grandchildren. He loved his role of Papa to Stephen, Bobby, Emily Mullaney and Danny and Susan Lizotte. Laughing, telling stories, helping, guiding and supporting the entire family was something that came second nature to such a giving and loving man. Visiting hours will be held at Shepherd Funeral Home, 216 Main St (Rt. 106) in Kingston on Wednesday January 31st, from 4:00-8:00 and a celebratory Mass on February 1, at 11:00 at St. Mary’s in North Plymouth. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Cancer Society at www.cancer.org.
