Obituary of Douglas Mintie Gray
Please share a memory of Douglas to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Douglas Mintie Gray Jr., 81, of Duxbury, MA and Boca Grande, FL, passed away peacefully on April 21, 2017. He was the beloved husband of Suzanne Van Mater Gray and the adored father of Dana Gray Moodey and the late Deborah Gray Wood. He was loved and admired by his five grandchildren, Sidney and Amanda Wood and Lily, Jack, and Hope Moodey. He recently became the proud great-grandfather of Flora Gale Wood, daughter of Sidney and Maggie Wood.
Doug was born in Waterbury, CT, in 1935 to the late Douglas Mintie Gray Sr. and Dorothy French Gray. Raised in Waban, MA, he attended Rivers Country Day School. He went on to graduate from Amherst College in 1957. He married his childhood sweetheart, Suzanne Van Mater, in 1956. They celebrated sixty years of marriage last summer.
Following his graduation from Amherst, Doug began service in the U.S. Navy as an Air Intelligence Officer stationed at Quonset Point, RI. After three years of service, Doug and Sue moved to Duxbury to raise their daughters on Captain’s Hill Road, where they lived for fifty-five years. As a dedicated member of the Duxbury Yacht Club, he had the opportunity to pursue tennis, golf, and boating, pastimes he continued to enjoy throughout his life.
The first eighteen years of Doug’s career were spent with Smith Barney & Co., where he worked in Institutional Equity Sales. This was followed by eighteen years at Merrill Lynch as a Director in Municipal Bonds Sales. He was respected by his colleagues, who admired his work ethic and the high moral standards that guided his business decisions. Upon retiring, Doug thoroughly enjoyed winters spent in Boca Grande, where he dedicated himself to perfecting his golf and tennis games. He delighted in the friends and community he found at Lemon Bay Golf Club.
Above all, Doug was a family man. He felt fortunate to have his siblings, Ruth Gray Switzer and Donald Harris Gray, living nearby. His loyalty and devotion to them, as well as his parents, wife, daughters, sons-in-law, grandchildren, great-granddaughter, and close friends were remarkable.
A private family graveside service will be held. Donations may be made in Doug’s memory to Cranberry Hospice, 36 Cortage Park Circle, Suite 326, Plymouth MA 02360.
