Obituary of Captain Joseph C. Conway

Captain Joseph C. Conway (retired) of the Medford Police Department passed away peacefully, surrounded by loving family, on March 4th at the age of 91. He leaves behind his wife, Mary T., known as “Mary Dear” (Rogers, Conway); his son Joseph and his wife Penny Conway of Indiana; his daughter Mary L. and her husband Richard Sage of Reading; his son Christopher and his wife Lori Conway of Reading. He is predeceased by his wife Mary Louise (Martin, Conway). He is also predeceased by his brothers William Conway and Sgt. Edward Conway. He is also survived by the following stepchildren: Jane and her husband Anthony Lavenia of Everett; Leo Rogers and his wife Sandra of Maine; Deborah and her husband, the late Thomas Scanlon of Medford; Mary and her husband John Carlson of Florida; Sgt. Lawrence Rogers and his wife Nancy of Medford. He also leaves behind 18 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He was born in Medford on November 9, 1925. He was the son of Joseph and Helen (Boylan) Conway of Medford. At the age of 17, in 1942, he joined the United States Navy. He took part in the invasion of Normandy, serving as a quartermaster on a mine sweeper. Following service in Normandy, he saw action sweeping mines in Japan. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy in 1946. In 1948 he joined the Medford Police Department and rose in rank to Captain, where he then served as the department’s prosecuting officer. During this time he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice with high honors from Northeastern University. He retired from the department in 1983 after 35 years. He moved from Medford to Carver to a retirement community in 1997. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, March 9th from 3-7:00 PM at the Shepherd Funeral Home, 116 Main St (Rt. 58) Carver. A funeral mass will be held on Friday, March 10th at 10:00 AM at St. Kateri Church, 126 South Meadow Rd, Plymouth. A graveside service will follow at Oak Grove cemetery, 230 Playstead Rd, Medford at 1:00 PM.
