Obituary of Marjorie Smith

Please share a memory of Marjorie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Marjorie Macomber Smith, Pembroke, born May 4, 1922, passed away February 24th at the age of 94, surrounded by her loving family. She has now found eternal peace with her beloved husband, Leslie B. Smith, Jr., her close and much loved friend Harry Boyer, and other loving family and friends who passed before her. Marjorie, born Marjorie Rose Macomber to Stanley and Grace Macomber of Pembroke, graduated from Pembroke High School in 1939. She attended Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School and was a legal secretary at Choate, Hall and Stewart until 1943 when she enlisted in the Navy Waves during WWll. She served as a Link Trainer Operator in Pensacola, FL and Hawaii. It was in Pensacola that she met Naval Cadet Leslie B. Smith, Jr. who became a pilot with rank of Lt. (j.g.). They later married on July 21, 1946 after the war. She often spoke emotionally and nostalgically of her Navy years as they played such an important part in her life. She wrote, “…the return trip [from Hawaii] on a hospital ship was climaxed by the magical moment as the ship passed under the Golden Gate Bridge.” After the war, she attended the Univ. of California and received a B.S. degree from Simmons College in Boston under the G.I. Bill. She worked in publishing until the birth of her children. Les and she established L&M Appliance. Co., Inc. of Pembroke (and later Plymouth) in the 1950’s. During the 70’s and 80’s, as well as continuing as bookkeeper for the appliance store, Marjorie was a part-time librarian at the Pembroke Library. Les and she built their own home in Pembroke where family still resides, but another special place was their cottage they built together on Clark’s Island in Plymouth Harbor. She is survived by her three children, two grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Words cannot express the love and wonderful memories of Marjorie that will be forever a part of her son Bradford M. Smith and wife, Tina and daughter, CoDee (Tyler, Texas); her middle daughter Jennifer G. Smith and husband W. Scott Hammond lll (Pembroke); youngest daughter Kathryn D. Smith (Pembroke) and her two sons—Marjorie’s oldest grandson Matthew B. Doucette, wife Schevanya, and daughter Liana (Pembroke); and her youngest grandson Adam J. Doucette, wife Hannah, and twins Collin and Jameson (Pembroke). She was the best mother, grandmother, and great grandmother anyone could ever hope for. Marjorie said herself many times that she lived a full, wonderful, and exciting life, but she will be so missed by those she leaves behind until the time comes when they will all be together again. Visiting hours for family and friends will be held at the Shepherd Funeral Home, 7 Mattakeesett St.(Rt. 14) Pembroke on Saturday, March 4th from 10-12am. A private family graveside ceremony will be held on Marjorie’s birthday, May 4th with Naval Military Honor Guards in attendance. In lieu of flowers, donations in Marjorie’s memory may be sent to the Pembroke Library, Center St., Pembroke, MA 02359. To offer condolences please visit www.shepherdfuneralhome.com.
