Obituary of Jack W. Gubbins
Please share a memory of Jack to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Jack W. Gubbins, (Sr.), passed away in Hingham's Pat Roche Hospice Home early Sunday morning, September 27, 2015, from lung cancer. He was attended by his two sons, Jack Jr. and Bill, and his daughter-in-law, Robin.
Born in Bellingham, WA, in 1920, he was until very recently a resident of Fort Myers, FL and earlier Sunnyvale, CA, and many years ago, Jamaica Plain, MA. His favorite place was Honolulu, HI, where he stayed part of every year that he could manage.
Husband of Mary, whom he will now meet in heaven, father of sons, Jack Jr. (Robin) and Bill (Sue); many grandchildren (on both coasts) and several great-grandchildren, all of whom he loved very much, and all of whom who loved him back. He was befriended by just about anyone who ever met him.
He honorably served in the U.S. Merchant Marines during WWII as a Warrant Officer on several ships, that all managed to avoid being torpedoed. Until he couldn't do it anymore, he was an avid tennis player and Marathon bicyclist, and a highly respected runner, having appeared in several running magazines. He also had a closet full of running-related T-shirts, (the most recent dated 2013), all of which will be cherished by his two sons, but which unfortunately cannot be worn by them, (size M).
A wake will take place at the Shepherd Funeral Home, 7 Mattakeesett Street, (Route 14), Pembroke Center, on Thursday, October 1, 2015, from 4:00-6:30 PM, followed by a prayer service starting at 6:30 PM.
Interment services will be private.
In lieu of flowers, guests are asked to please make a donation to the Norwell VNA, 120 Longwater Drive, Norwell, MA 02061.
