Obituary of Elizabeth Safe Richards

Elizabeth Safe Richards, a long time resident of Duxbury MA and Boca Grande, FL passed away peacefully at her home on December 11, 2014 at the age of 80 after a brief illness. She was predeceased by her husband of 51 years Kenneth Shaw Safe, Jr. as well as her sons Kenneth Shaw Safe, III and Thorn K.S. Safe. She is survived by her husband of eight years, George (Tad) L. Richards, II.
Betsy is survived by a large, loving family including her sister Anne K. Scott and brother, Edmund S. Kelley, Jr. as well as her sister in law, Louise Mauran Groton. She will be greatly missed by her three daughters, Hope S. Duarte, Elizabeth S.S. Bitting and Edith S. Devnew as well as her daughters-in-law, Wendy S. Safe and Linda B. Safe.
Her 11 grandchildren adored their “B-Boo”. They include Justin Nuland, Lauren Burto, Lili and Rob Bitting, Tyler, Ned and Alex Devnew, Shaw, Owen and Kelley Safe and Nick Safe. She was great-grandmother to Hunter Burto.
Betsy was involved in numerous community and charitable activities. The organization closest to her heart was the Festival of Trees founded by Friends of Cranberry Hospice. She was a member of the Duxbury Yacht Club, Snug Harbor Investment Partners, Duxbury Garden Club, The Chilton Club and The Country Club. With two partners she owned “Oleander”, a gift shop in Duxbury.
Betsy loved spending time on the water, especially when accompanied by her grandchildren. She will be missed by a large, loving circle of dear friends.
At her request, there will be no calling hours. A memorial service in celebration of her life will be held on Wednesday, December 17, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Parish Church, 842 Tremont Street, Duxbury, MA. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Cranberry Area Hospice, 36 Cordage Park Circle, Suite 326 Plymouth, MA 02360.
