Obituary of Jeanne Hunter

Jeanne Audrey (Hall) Hunter, 86, died Feb. 5 at Jordan Hospital in Plymouth, following a lengthy illness. She was the wife of the late George Francis Hunter for 30 years. Born in Braintree, she was the daughter of Sarah Edna (Litchfield) Hall and Clifford Hall. She was educated in Braintree schools and following graduation from Braintree High School in 1946, Mrs. Hunter also attended Wilfred Academy beautician school. Her mother operated a beauty salon in their home for many years and Mrs. Hunter learned to do manicures there, where she met her husband George. They were married in 1946. The couple settled in Weymouth in 1950, where Mrs. Hunter continued to live following her husband’s death in 1976. She moved in with her daughter Betsey in Carver in 2008. While raising three children, she continued her work career, first for Armstrong Cork in Braintree, then as a florist. For more than a decade she was employed with the Purity Supreme grocery chain, where she retired in 1996 as a bakery department manager. Mrs. Hunter was an active retiree, enjoying travel to experience new places, but annual excursions to Hawaii were an abiding passion. The graceful art of ballroom dancing was another passion, as evidenced by her collection of nearly 200 pairs of dancing shoes, all size 7 ½. When not traveling, cooking or dancing, she proved to be an artful seamstress and excelled at many of the traditional crafts. Mrs. Hunter loved crossword and jigsaw puzzles, was an avid reader and enjoyed card games, using solitaire as a bridge to the new world of computing. She also enjoyed passive activities, such as following her favorite NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon and enjoying the fluctuating fortunes of both the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots. Survivors include: one son, Robert Clifford Hunter and his wife Diamond of Pleasanton, CA; two daughters, Betsey Lou Wimperis of Carver and Jo Anne Hunter, formerly of Weymouth; two nieces, Judith Flynn and Roberta Leavitt; two nephews, Thomas Magee and Russell Magee. She was predeceased by a sister, Virginia Magee. Also left behind are numerous cats and dogs which were part of her immediate family. In that light, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations are asked for the Promising Hope Animal Sanctuary, 40 Beach St, Middleboro, Ma. 02346. Visiting hours will be from 5-8 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 10, at the Shepherd Funeral Home 116 Main St.(rt. 58) Carver. A funeral service will be held at the home at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 11, followed by interment at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Weymouth.
