Obituary of William Woodruff Betteridge

William Woodruff Betteridge, 89, passed away November 20, 2013 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Bill was born in Barrington, IL, the son of William and Madelyn Betteridge. He was raised in Short Hills, NJ on Forest Drive and attended the Short Hills Country Day School, The Pingry School, and The Loomis Institute. He lived in Short Hills most of his life before moving to Chatham, NJ nine years ago.
Bill graduated from Yale University class of 1945W after serving as an Army 1st Lieutenant in WWII. He received an MBA from New York University. Bill enjoyed a successful 35 year career at AT&T serving in numerous executive positions. He retired from AT&T as Vice President in 1986.
Bill was a dedicated civic participant holding many positions throughout his life. He was active in the Millburn Library Board, the Pingry School Board of Trustees, the Yale Alumni Club, the Millburn-Short Hills Republican Club, and most recently, the Millburn Old Guard. He was a lifetime member of Christ Church in Short Hills. Bill was an avid golfer, frequent traveler, engaging conversationalist and friend to everyone.
Bill leaves behind his beloved children, son James Betteridge and his wife Cindy of Guilderland, NY, son David Betteridge and his wife Lisa of Duxbury, MA, his daughter Ann Wheeler and her husband John, of Haymarket, VA, his beloved grandchildren, Emily Graham, Thomas Betteridge, Andrew Betteridge, Seth Betteridge, Luke Betteridge, Katharine Betteridge, William Betteridge II, Elizabeth Wheeler and Christina Wheeler as well as great-grandchildren Autumn Betteridge, Skylar Graham and Colden Betteridge. Bill was married for 55 years to his beloved wife Jane who pre-deceased him in 2006. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly.
A memorial service will be held, Saturday, November 30th at noon at Christ Church in Short Hills with a reception to follow in the Parish Hall.
