Obituary of Adelaide L. Murray

Adelaide L. “Nicky” (Nicholls) Murray, 86, until recently of Carver, died Aug. 31 in Concord, N.H., after a brief illness. Wife of the late Charles E. Murray and former wife of the late Edward P. Tirrell, she was the sister of Benjamin W. Nicholls of Plymouth; the late Feodore M. Hewins of Canaan, N.H.; and the late Claud Nicholls of Hanover. Born in Brockton and raised in Quincy, she was the daughter of the late Claud and Muriel L. Nicholls. She is survived by her daughter Linda M. Sinuc and husband Robert of Glenmont N.Y.; sons Edward Tirrell of Swampscott and William G. Tirrell of Dania, Fla.; daughter Sarah L. Tirrell-Wysocki and husband David of Canterbury, N.H.; and stepdaughters Margaret M. Cahill and husband Tom, and Barbara A. Murray, all of Chesapeake, Va. In her earlier years, Nicky worked as bookkeeper for Rehabilitation Associates in Dedham, and for Dr. John Angley of Pembroke and attorney Edward Angley. For many years, Nicky was a trustee and beloved member of the Waldo Congregational Church and its Junior Women’s group in Brockton, where she met many lifelong friends. She was a Brownie and Girl Scout leader and Cub Scout den mother for many years and worked as a volunteer for the HELP LINE in Quincy. In her later years, she was very active in the DAV Auxiliary, serving as treasurer and commander of the Plymouth Chapter 72 and State Chaplain. She was a long-time volunteer at the VA Hospital in Brockton, and more recently, coordinator for the DAV Van Program that served VA patients. While wintering for many years in Florida, she was Secretary/Treasurer of the Deerfield Lake chapter of the Federation of Manufactured Home Owners of Florida. Nicky enjoyed entertaining friends and family and organizing events for the various veterans’ organizations she proudly served. She also enjoyed being a grandmother to John R. and Adam J. Sinuc; Jaime D., Nora C. and Owen B. Tirrell; and Jordan D. and Hannah J. Tirrell-Wysocki and great-grandmother to Emma H., Madison J. and Lauren M. Sinuc. Calling hours will be Friday, Sept. 6, from 9:30 - 11:30 a.m., followed by a service from 11:30-12:30, at Shepherd Funeral Home, 116 Main Street, Carver. Those unable to attend may remember Nicky by joining her family in ringing a bell in her honor at noon. Interment will be at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne at 1:45. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to a charity of your choice.
