Gilbert W Mellin, of Carver, and formally of Leonia, New Jersey died Sept 19, 2011. He was 85. Gilbert was born September 22, 1925 in Manorville, Pennsylvania. He joined the Navy in 1943 and was selected for officers training rising to the rank of Captain in the medical corps. He graduated from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1949 and was named chief resident at Bellevue Hospital in 1953. Dr Mellin started a long career at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in 1955 after working two years with the U.S. Public Health Service. He received federal grants for numerous published fetal life studies, was an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and acting Director of Pediatrics before becoming Director of Quality Assurance for the hospital Dr. Mellin retired in 1997 and moved to Carver Mass, to enjoy time with his family. He joined United Parish Church of Carver where he sang in the choir continuing a lifelong love of music and a good theological discussion. He also enjoyed hiking, computers and boating. Gilbert was known for his constant smile, a reminder that he always viewed life with a happy heart, a sense of humor and a generous spirit.Gilbert is survived by his daughter Sarah Mellin and her husband Dan Marino of Carver Mass, his daughter Deborah Mellin of Conn., four nephews and a niece. A celebration of Dr. Mellin’s life will be held at the United Parish Church of Carver on October 29 2011 at 1:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the United Parish Church.
