Carver - Robert Leonard Arnold, 91 of Carver passed away on Sunday, January 7, 2018 at the Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital Plymouth. He was the beloved husband of 43 years to the late Hazel (West) Arnold, who predeceased him at the age of 63. He was born in Brockton, Massachusetts, to parents Florence (Brown) and Leonard on August 8, 1926, and moved to Plymouth with his sisters Barbara and Helen and brothers William and George. He graduated from Plymouth High School in 1944. He then joined the United States Marine Corps, where he served during World War II in the 4th Division, fighting in the battle for Iwo Jima. After returning from the Pacific Theater, he married Hazel in 1949 and built their house in Plymouth. He earned his aircraft mechanics license and started a career in refrigeration / air conditioning, initially working for Hendrie’s Ice Cream. He then founded Arnold Refrigeration in 1959. During that time he raised five children and two litters of english bulldog puppies, built numerous model airplanes and renovated two single-engine airplanes in the back yard and living room. He retired in 1988 and the following year moved to the South Meadow Village in Carver to spend more time playing golf, bocci, and going to the coffee shop with friends. He is survived by his five children, Linda White and her husband Dennis, Nancy Campbell and her good friend Clare Brady, Susan Burgess and her husband Rusty, all of Plymouth, Robert Jr. and his wife Wendy of Kingston, and John and his wife Michelle of East Lyme, Connecticut, 9 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, and 8 grand-dogs. Calling hours are from 4pm to 8pm, Thursday, January 11, 2018 at the Shepherd Funeral Home (116 Main Street, Carver, MA). A Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes (130 Main Street, Carver MA) on Friday, January 12, 2018 at 10am. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project (woundedwarriorproject.org).
