Frederick P Scagliarini Jr. Obituary
Frederick (Fred) P. Scagliarini Jr., 87, of Springfield, passed peacefully surrounded by his family on February 28th.
Born on June 7th, 1938, in Springfield, he was the only child of Frederick and Elizabeth (Clini) Scagliarini. Fred was raised in the Hungry Hill neighborhood of Springfield and later moved to East Springfield.
He was educated in Springfield Public Schools and was a 1956 graduate of Springfield Technical High School where he played football and baseball.
Fred married the love of his life, Marcia Varney, in 1961 and they shared 59 wonderful years together before her passing in 2020. For over 60 years they filled their Blaine Street home with love, family, and holiday memories for multiple generations.
Fred had three passions in life; family, faith, and baseball (and telling stories about any and all of them). Fred was a route salesman for Table Talk Pie Inc. for over 25 years, but nothing made him happier when he was able to retire to his new role as “Poppy”, spending Tme with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
He made it a point to be involved in their games, plays, graduations and share in their passions. Despite progressively losing his vision to retinitis pigmentosa (RP), Fred always kept a positive attitude, never letting his disability define him.
Fred’s faith in God never wavered, he was a communicant at Holy Name Parish in Springfield and an active member of the Cursillo community of which he had many cherished friends.
Fred coached many baseball teams over a 30 year span and was proud of being a part of the 1987 Tri-County League Team Champions. During the baseball season you could expect to see him by radio listening to his beloved Red Sox. He was predeceased by his parents and his wife, Marcia.
He is survived by Thomas (Donna) Scagliarini, Steven (Janine) Scagliarini, and Stacy (Tim) Lanman, seven grandchildren, six great grandchildren, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Dennis and Marilyn Varney, his brother-in-law Richard Varney, and many nieces and nephews.
Fred’s family would like to thank Dianne, Maria, Shelly, the staff at Wingate Kingston and Cranberry Hospice for their compassion and care.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Fighting Blindness Foundation. Services will be will held at 10am, Tuesday, March 10th at Holy Name Parish, 323 Dickinson St, Springfield, MA 01108
